Hey people!!

Well, crawled under the SHO to find an oil leak and found a torn CV boot instead! Doesn't look like it's been torn long, I can still see grease and there's hardly any dirt in there.

Question 1: How long can I drive it like this? Never had a ripped boot and a little short on funds, BUT I don't want to damage anything. I'll stop driving it if I have to.

Question 2: I'll probably do the work myself, so, what do I need to look out for? Any special techniques you guys are hiding? :p

Question 3: Advanced has a lifetime warranty axle for $75. Go with that one?

Thanks for the help! Looking forward to getting greasy with the SHO again!:woo-hoo:

You can always replace just the boot if the axle is still good and the CV joint is not clicking yet. You can drive on a CV with a broken grease boot for a pretty long time. You might also want to consider getting a "quick fix" type CV boot that doesn't require removal of the axle (you cut off the old boot, regrease the CV and put on the new boot while still on the car) - they don't hold up forever but it might be worth a shot for a cheap, short term repair.

Hmmm, this might be a good idea.

I don't drive my car much, being unemployed and all.

Local parts store carry that?

sure, it's called DUCT tape, and a lot of it. get a roll of really good ductape, and pack the CV boot with grease through the tear, clean it up and wrap Duct tape around it.

held up on my old 94 GL wagon almost 10 years ago for 6-7 months. just make sure you check it periodically. Axles arent all that expensive though.

You should be able to get a quick-fix boot at any auto parts store, Rockauto sells them as well. The cheapskate in me really likes SHOmethewayhome's idea, it would probably work OK for a few months. If you have the time you can repair the axle 100% with an OE style boot for around $15, but you will have to take the axle out of the car and disassemble it. I never took the time because axles were only $40 a pop when I replaced them.

Thanks for all help.

I'll probably just leave it for a couple weeks and buy a new one from shosource:woo-hoo:

All the others I have found are rebuilt units.

My experience is that the 'quick replace' boots cost as much as a rebuilt axle, so I've always just changed out the axle.

My experience with the quick replace boots are- they suck. Don't waste your time with these.
