When I was at the dealer, I looked at a SHO spare tire. The tire was a Maxxis T155 70D 17 but I forgot to check to see if the car had 20" wheels. My question is: Is a 17" spare tire acceptable if you have 20" wheels? What is the best compact tire size for vehicles with the 20" wheels?

The Maxxis web site has compact spare tires in a larger size (T155/70R18). I was wondering if this would be a better tire and would it fit the existing spare wheel? I want something that will fit the existing spare wheel well.

I'll check my spare and let you know soon... don't get hung up on wheel size...what you need to worry about is overall diameter of the tire. I think the 19" and 20" have the same overall diameter. Just one has less wheel/more tire and the other has more wheel/less tire.....

My SHO with the 20's didn't come with a spare at all. Just a kit with inflate a flat in the can. I assumed that the 20 wouldn't fit in the spare well.....

You got the performance package. The spare tire will your car just fine since it's the same diameter.

If anyone finds a part number for the oem spare tire please post it. I would like to get one for my car.

Ford Motor Company doesn't sell tires as OEM replacement parts, but there is a part number for the spare wheel itself ... 5G1Z 1007 AA is shown as a 17" mini-spare wheel.

My spare is a T155/70 D18 which will work but I wouldn't count on it being the same diameter.

My son's Taurus (2002) just got a flat and he had to use the temporary spare. It was definitely smaller....got him home just fine but it triggered the ABS light because of the different diameter. Once we got the tire fixed and back on the car...the ABS light went back out.
