It seems as though every time I remove the axle from the knucle, the back side of the bearing is packed with a heavy grease. Like the mechanic before me packed a bunch in there to help seal up the already sealed bearings from the elements. Is this a common practice or do you think that the grease came from inside the bearings, maybe oozing out under high temps? The rubber ring on the axle housings don't look real watertight, maybe they're trying to improve sealing ability with the grease.

Has anybody that has replaced the bearing pack in their front knucles ever done this? Thanks.

The hub bearings should be sealed and perma-lubed. I don't know how you'd get additional grease in there, anyway, without somehow injecting in between the race halves.

No, this grease looks like it was packed in from the back, right before you slide the axle through the hub. I'll show you when you come out next Eric.
