Question about Ebay Kit.

Im looking into turboing out my MTX SHO. I Understand it costs alot of money and theres alot of work to be done, but im actually serious about doing this.

Problem is, im a complete FI noob. I read the howto and it makes alot of sense, now im trying to gather a parts list.

I know ebay links arnt permitted, so ill post a picture of whats in the "kit"

Out of that, what is useful if anything? I would be all over Toolman's pipes if he still made/sold them, but it looks like he isnt anymore. And thats the biggest part im worried about - the piping.

That kit costs ~$800, if id be able to use most of it to reach my goal, I got no problem forking it out. Im willing to spend 4-5k on this project to get it done, probally ~2k of it will be paying a shop to install it.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be awesome.

the boost controller,the turbo's are really hit or miss,i know people who've been boosting with the same ebay turbo for a couple years,and others who've been through two a year.

if you get it runnin with the crappy turbo you can always upgrade later. this kit doesnt come with any hot pipes. they are the pipes that run from the exhaust manifolds to the turbo and back to the mufflers. plus your going to need more pipes than that to get the cold pipes the way you want.

its actually not that bad of a deal with all the stuff you get tho.

theres really nothing in the ebay kits that will gelp you reach your goal, besides the piping and the intercooler, and the couplers (couplers only good if you never exceed like 5psi)

with these kits, the turbos never last 5k miles, sometimes they die within 100 miles, the wastegates die immediatly and your lucky if the BOV's ever work right

taking the cheap route with forced induction isnt always a bad idea, BUT taking the "buying chinese parts off ebay because the LOOK good and are cheap" route for FI IS VERY MUCH a bad idea

the best way to assemble a low cost turbo kit is to find people parting out their turbo cars and buy things one at a time.

i wouldnt use words like never...i can show you plenty of guys on probetalk that run ebay turbos..and these arent kids who can't afford anything else..these are guys who've done rwd 2jz conversions,etc. not telling you to go ahead and get them...just another point of view

fine, let me rephrase in a way that doesnt use the word "never" ....

the ebay turbos have an astronomical fail rate compared to name brand turbos, although sometimes people do luck out. these people then go on the internet and brag that they got a good turbo off ebay. the rest of the people who bought ebay turbo hide their shame by never ever mentioning it online. that way noone will ever know that the made fools of themselves by not heading everyones warning

and yes, ive been sworn to secrecy numerous time already

i think i can remember 4 people i know that used ebay turbos. 1 of them which was a awd talon stood up to alot of power and did last a long time. the others were on hondas and didnt last much more than 1 summer.

so thats a 25% chance you will need a new turbo after a few months.

ahaha. well then let me ask this. Sense custom fabbing isnt my forte, how much harder/easier is it to throw a supercharger onto one of these beasts? I know it involves modifying the acc. belt and such, but exhaust and I are not friends.

or a 75% chance youll need a new turbo after a few months

add in the 4 i know of, all of which failed within a season, and you have a 87% chance of needing a new turbo after one season

ive always considered the STS rear mount kits to be good scources of parts for a turbo kit, you get all name brand parts, lots of piping, all your flanges, the camaro kits have fans for the intercooler, oil pump, oil lines ... plenty of charge piping all with beaded ends

ive seen complete kits hardly used go for as little as 2500, and thats not a bad price at all just gotta cut it up and make it fit

For around $4k you can get a supercharger kit to bolt right on - I think there is even one in the classifieds for sale at the moment for possibly even less than that.

Which is better really depends on what you are trying to accomplish and how much work you want to do.

The work I want to do and the work I am capable of doing are two completely different things.

If I can get something to bolt right on and only need to tune it afterwards, fuel pump, and injectors, I couldn't be happier.

you can get tony at ntp (northtexasperformance) to make you a bracket and piping for whatever supercharger you buy. after that its pretty much moderate mechanics work (other than tuning the tweecer)

-battery in the trunk
-48lb injectors with shonut fpr
-80mm maf

you wouldnt have to cut or weld anything. although, you would have to do some drilling for the battery and making the wires for the maf longer.

That would be great, i would have no problem relocating the battery, upgrading the injectors, and isnt the MAF just plug and play? im good at electronics.

I just sent FPS an email with what I want done to see how much they would want to do everything including parts if I dropped my car off.

What superchargers are generally used in SHO's? Vorteh i see alot.

How much does ntp generally charge for the piping? It would be much easier to do this.

And last question. If i supercharged my 3.0, and wanted to upgrade to a 3.2, would that cause lots of problems? i plan on keeping the 3.0 acc belt.

Junkyard turbos can be had and rebuilt for crazy cheap if you know where to look/buy. Grab one out of an older diesel, rebuild it and call it a day.

What exactly is an eBay turbo? I didn't think that eBay was manufacturing turbos these days...
