This question involves Accel coils for SHOs, in my case a '92.

In another thread about Accel coils, SHOSPAZZ posted:
As stated, the ACCEL supercoil is just regarded as junk. There have been multiple failures by many people who have used them with this car, no matter if it was a 89,90,91,92,93...etc. V6 SHO. Just find a replacement OEM coil and enjoy the already perfectly fine ignition system.

A while back I installed an Accel coil on my '92, and, after reading about some issues with same, and that the OEM coil works just fine, I decided to reinstall the OEM coil and check performance.

I have been having some part-throttle rough acceleration issues after the engine is warm (seems OK, though, when you punch it, and the car idles smoothly cold or warm).

When I removed the Accel coil, I noticed some green residue in the output tower of the coil for cylinder 2. I've seen this in other automotive coil output ends when there have intermittent voltage issues. Could this residue indicate that the output from the Accel coil is failing, or is very intermittent for cylinder 2?

I'll check in with feedback about whether my part-throttle acceleration woes are better with the OEM coil back in place.

Many thanks!

when copper oxidizes it turns into a green powder.
corroded terminals will definitely screw up electronics.
if you must use copper, coat it with an electrical grease to prevent corrosion.

The Verdict

Hello again. I removed the Accel coil, reinstalled the OEM coil, and the car now runs as smooth as it ever did. No more part-throttle hesitation, much easier to drive, since I don't have to rev as much to take off from a stop.

No vote for Accel coils for SHO V6s from me. I'm just sorry I didn't try this a while ago.

I had removed the 73mm C & L MAF body at first, cleaned the MAF sensor and put the OEM MAF assembly back on, thinking that could be the source of the trouble, but that hadn't changed the part-throttle hesitation. Now I'll put the C&L MAF back on, see how it drives, and if OK I'll leave the C & L on for the increased air flow!

It's much more fun driving a performance car if it runs smoothly under any throttle position. The hesitation was irritating, to say the least.
