Browsing thru ebay's wide selection of shos today, I came across an ad with a guy who has a 92 w/ push button start. I know it's unnecessary but damn cool. Anyone on here know how to do this? :dribble:

From what I have read its a mere problem of hunting down the correct wiring in the dash for the starting system and just splicing/re-wiring the switch into it. (though I might be way off base ... cause we all know everything we read on the net is true!) Its been an Idea i'd like to try since I don't have PATS or any other of those silly things; but the idea of chopping into my ignition system just doesn't give me warm fuzzy feelings. Esp. with my car being a daily driver....

Maybe a new winter project?

That's exactly what i'm afraid of. If it ain't broke don't f*&k with it, right? I'd hate to screw something up w/ the electronics of the car.

seeing as how Im getting a temporary winter vehicle this season, I might look a little deeper into this and see what can be done. Would be a cool thing to have ... it'll freak out your passengers too.

But.... I don't want to have the button exclusivly for starting, which means piggybacking onto the existing wiring.

Anyone else know the wiring of the steering column?? esp. the wires and the things to look for?

I can't remember the exact color of the wire or anything, but it is pretty simple to wire in a push button starter. You are only dealing with two wires and your key would still work. You need to find the wire on the ignition that has power all the time when the key is on, and when it is turned to the start position. Then you splice into that wire and to the switch and then to the wire that gets 12volts when you do turn the ignition switch to the start position. You need a voltmeter or light so that you can see which wire gets 12volts when you turn your key to start.

You all know that the key cylinder itself does not have any of the wiring to start the car in it, correct? All the cylinder does is move a shaft up and down on a BIG switch. It a plastic box with a metal peg sticking out of it and when you turn your key the peg is moved back and forth in the box activating the different circuits.

You can start the car without a key if you take knee panel off and another panel and then unbolt the electrical box with all the ignition wires and then you can slide the slider and start the car. The steering wheel is still locked though.

I have an autostarter hooked up to my car, so when I take the panel back apart to hook up a vaps switch, I will note the color of the wires for the ignition. Don't know when I will get to it, but I will post when I do.

Will

Once I get both cars running correct, I'm going to try to hook up a big red button on the beater. :D

This wouldn't screw up a remote start would it?

Just run a wire from the battery to the switch then the other from the switch to the starter solenoid! Just splice the wire into the wire between the solenoid and the starter and your set! Be sure and turn the key to the "ON" position before you hit the button!

I have mine like this cause the ignition switch is *****'d and it cost as much as the car(about $230).

use the button from the S2000's that says START on the big red button. And yeah I'd think it'd mess up remote satrt, that'd be why its a summer car only thing.

i have on on my car and all you need is a high amp bush button for an auto parts store and some wire. i have my button hiden in that little comparment in fron of the shifter. take on end of the wire and conect it to the small post of the starter solinoid on the fender under the hood and the other end to the bottom main terminal of the solinoid. then just run your wires to the button thats it.

Break the cylinder lock part for your key so that part can be turned without a key. That out of the way, take a wire that has power all the time (cigarette lighter would work) and connect it to one post on the button. Then take another wire and splice it into the blue wire with red stripe under your dash. It connects to the clutch switch on MTX SHO's (brake switch on ATX I think). Turn the tumbler to run, push down the clutch (or apply the brake in ATX models), push the button and the car should fire up. Let off the button so the starter doesn't get worn out and away you go. Pretty simple to do.

Still requires either the use of a key or to break the tumbler. So I think I'll stick with a key. :)
