Went to Advance Auto today to borrow their reader and check the reason for the CEL, but theit reader did not function when plugged in. I had the ignition on but no action from the reader. I did not start my SHO. Where did I go wrong? a guy from Advance was helping me and he was at a loss also.

A bad ECM caused my reader not to read my codes. However if you have a CEL the computer should give a reader codes. Did you try the paperclip?

could the reader display 3 digits? I know that screwed up my mechanic something feirce. ...I ended up using an oscilliscope (in lieu of an analog voltmeter, that I didn't have) to let the EEC tap out the codes. ....If it only displays 2 digits, that could be the reason why.

not to bootleg, however will the codes still show if the light goes off? meaning: CEL comes on intermittently while undernormal highway driving. o2 sensors have been replaced and recent (yet very late 60k) has been done at around 110K..lol it seems to shut off prior to me pulling into the driveway. it also stays on the highway for anywhere from 8-15 seconds. what could cause this? I will also pull the codes tomorrow morning in sunlight.

I had the same problem, brought my 94 ATX to a mech had him plug in his fancy snap on reader and the car wouldn't respond. Plugged it into a cheap code reader still no reponse. Decieded my ecu must be fugged up. Got my 93 mtx, plugged in the code reader, still doesnt work... All those times i plugged in the one big plug and not the little gray one thats next to it. I have to assume the mechanic made the same mistake because now my old atx reads fine to the code reader. So even though it sounds dumb just make sure both plugs are plugged in. hope the problem is this easy. :)
