Is there a way to mechanically verify that the PTU is damaged? I know the smell of the hot oil is an indicator. For example, I know that I can twist the rear output shaft xx degrees on a good one and xx degrees on a bad one?
I was doing my rear brakes a few days ago and noticed that the driveshaft can spin a bit before it is stopped by the PTU. I would expect some backlash but what I have is excessive compared to a differential.
