PTU Issue Verification

Is there a way to mechanically verify that the PTU is damaged? I know the smell of the hot oil is an indicator. For example, I know that I can twist the rear output shaft xx degrees on a good one and xx degrees on a bad one?
I was doing my rear brakes a few days ago and noticed that the driveshaft can spin a bit before it is stopped by the PTU. I would expect some backlash but what I have is excessive compared to a differential.

If you are spinning the rear tires, you will get a bunch of spin because the clutches are not engaged.

Is your PTU whining or grinding? If not, it is fine.

Right now I am mostly fighting vibrations. Much of it is in the front somewhere. I have some worn out parts I know of that need replacing before I continue diagnosing. I am just curious if there is a mechanical check for the PTU?

Check bearings and bushings. Bushings on control arm are hyrdrolic fluid filled. Should be pretty easy to tell if they are bad.

If its the PTU, it will be apparent like said above. Cant miss the popping and grinding noises underneath.

From time to time I do get a weird clicking noise as I slow down for a stop.

The other question I have is if anyone ever back flushes the vent hose to make sure its not plugged internally?

I think that I will be doing mine tonight to see what happens. I am guessing its plugged. Then the fluid expansion has to push out passed the seals.

The other thing I was wondering about these is if there are any reasons not to pull the side cover off of it while its in the car. I know some t-cases for other vehicles have bearings that need the case to be oriented or they fall out.
