Anyone retrofit their gen1 or gen2 headlights into projectors?

Kids do it all the time on the cobaltss forum and its nasty, much better than buying a ghetto headlight.

It looks stock but the did some custom modifications and they use their oringal housing and just have a BMW or Audi projector in their?

Just Curious. :)

I am working on something similiar right now too, but work and other resposibilities take free time away from that. The only thing I"m doing it putting projectors intomarker light/turn signal area. As for turn signal, it will be built into a bumper and will be LED and so large and bright, so that noone can say that they can't see it. Something similiar to Audi Q7.

dual hi/lo

I Have been playing with this idea for about a year or so. Trying to be different I also wanted to do a dual hi/lo setup. Tinkering with it here and there this is what i finally finished last week.

. They are cheapy Ebay projectors G3. They are designed for retro fitting, they have a LED halo on the back side of the projector to illuminate the housing. I painted the housing the same color as the rest of the car so I flipped the LED halo so it will shine into the projector. The LED halo can be set to a color or it can cycle. I cut the entire face off the stock headlight housing and used the GTO clear headlight covers as the new face. I had to silicon the GTO cover in place since it did not fit tightly. I only have the one done this far as a trial on the next one I m going to try and make it look cleaner. Any thoughts or ideas more then welcome. thanks

I do have to ask one thing, what's done with the front turn signal? Suppose you could use the fishtank.

how are you working the hi/lo system? Are you angling the projectors?

I think if someone were to put enough work in,the gen 2 could look good with projectors.
The gen 1 would just look odd...

If done right I'd imagine it wouldn't look too strange. If fox body mustang can pull it off I think I a properly retrofitted gen 1 could, maybe.

If you don't angle the projectors then how do you differentiate the hi beams from the low beams? I don't know much about headlights never played with them before. I'm a headlight noob.

Well the way projectors work is they have a VERY precise cut off line produced by a plate of metal to cut off the light. BUT for some very $$$$ cars that run projectors for highs that plate isnt there thus not creating the cut off line.
For example:

As stated when the solenoid is activated the shutter opens and you have the high beam effect, once you turn off the high beam the solenoid closes the shutter giving you back your nice clean cutoff line. Yes some vehicles have a total of 4 projectors 2 are high beam and 2 are lows, which the 2nd set of lights come on for your high beams and you have a dedicated low beam without a solenoid at all. But no the second set is not really angled any diffrently from the low beams.

I have a clear idea of how I'm going about this.

Going to use the FX clear lens projector here

Thinking that for the "clear lens" I am going to mold the inside of the factory lens with concrete or something similar, then bondo the mold surface until it is smooth and vacuum form acrylic around the mold, cut the mold out and viola.

Also, I am going to create a "Shroud" for the projector inside the headlight housing. and cover it in carbon fiber wrap for a clean look.

The turn signal will get a "shroud" and lens as well.

Still put together thoughts but I will have this show started as soon as I buy new housing for my SHO so that I can toy with the old ones.

The FXR projector is a long favorite of the retrofit crowd and I am sure you will be pleased with the output and performance along with the price of this projector. Good luck on it.
