I have a '93 3.2 SHO with an automatic trans. My problem is it likes to downshift before it should. And when it does downshift it will sometimes do it hard. It doesn't do it all of the time and only during city driving. It was rebuilt 30,000 miles ago. I brought it to the tranny shop and they said it does not sound like a tranny problem, but a sensor problem. They couldn't check the code because the problem isn't consistent enough. What sensor would cause a shifting problem?

i second VSS/ been there done that...

edit: it is very easy to pull your codes your self, before even going to a shop... then you know what you are more than likely in for, before you even go. follow the link in my sig.

the guy at the tranny shop, just didnt feel like doing a VSS on your car. lol, it is in a tight spot. i think passenger side of the tranny, right near the axle... obviously has wires going to it. $50 part or so.

I looked at where the VSS is and don't even want to mess with it. Could the problem be a bad throttle position sensor? That's easier to fix.

Codes....Codes....Codes....:bonk:

After checking codes, if it is the VSS there will be no other solution other than to change it. Yes, it's a nightmare or at best only a bad dream but somebody will have to do it.

Also, if the VSS must be replaced, don't even be tempted to give up and leave the aluminum heat shield off. That protects the VSS from the cats heat which the VSS is very near to. Leaving it off will result in failure of the new VSS in pretty short order.

That part is so hard to replace that when I did mine on my 93's original tranny, I didn't even consider aftermarket but used a genuine Motorcraft OEM part. It was something in the range of $50.

But again, it's past time to check the codes and post them before jumping to final conclusions.

Been there, done it and don't want to do it again. It is probably the hardest piece of the car to get to. Be sure to rent a monkey with long double jointed arms.

So, does it downshift hard when you make it kickdown... Or are you just driving along and *bang* it commands a different gear.
