I live in Big Bend.

My car starts and is very drivable, but it has a very rough and surging idle (vibrates the whole car)and it throws a CEL after 5 minutes of driving and it comes and goes after that. Sometimes it runs to redline really good, other times it feels like it has half the power it should.

I pulled the codes and it says 172/176/136 which are all "O2 reading lean" codes, and the cylinder balance test says problems with cylinders 2, 3, 4, and 6. I was told it's probably a vacuum leak but I have done what I can to check for those and I can't find anything. I tried cleaning the MAF too but that didn't help. I also tried removing the Superchip my car came with just in case, but so far nothing has changed.

I dunno.. I know a lot more about fixing cars then your average girl but this one is frustrating me. I would like to try new O2 sensors but I don't have the extra money right now. I also bought a couple cans of fuel injector cleaner to try... *shrug*

I've only had it for a couple weeks, it was like that when I bought it.. the previous owner just said he thought it was O2 sensors.

Did the PO give any idea of what was done up to this happening. i.e. any type of service work he or someone else may have done.

He told me it had a full 60k done by Performance Plus in Madison last year some time, and new plugs/wires/plug seals earlier this year...

Big Bend - You are only 30-40 mins away from me (Lake Geneva Area). I'm sure you've been asked this, but, Have you pulled the plug wires and checked for oil in the plug wells? Have you made sure the plug wires are on correctly? Could happen if the PO did it himself. The order in some publications is wrong.
Check to see if any of the intake bolts might be loose. The ones attaching the Snakes to the Heads. Check the intake couplers as well (Snakes to end Tanks). Plus double check the ground on the back side of the engine located on the passenger side of the car. It will be attached to the firewall and the back side of the engine. Make sure it it attaches/tight and clean.

Let's get this in a new thread just for this and get this one back on topic.

Molly,

To add to this, make sure you have disconnected the battery cables for 30 minutes to reset the memory and check codes again.

Actually I haven't looked for oil in the plug wells yet.. I will do that when I get home tonight (if it's not raining too much).

I don't think the wires are hooked up wrong, from time to time the car DOES pull really really hard to 7000+rpms and it does so smoothly. I've screwed up firing orders on cars before and I'm used to what that feels like.. of course I'll double check though just in case.

I will double check the intake bolts too.. I sprayed carb cleaner EVERYWHERE around the intake, around every mating surface I could see (to check for vacuum leaks). I didn't find anything but I'll make sure they're all on snugly.. The PO *did* take off the intake to paint it so he definitely may have screwed something up putting it all back together again. I just suck at finding vacuum leaks.

Hehe, I know.. I have been doing that after trying new things. I'm sick of resetting the clock, LOL.

im willing to bank on the intake being loose or not tightened right... this is exactly what happened to mine when i put it all back together after the tranny job... just loosen all the bolts holding the intake on(you shouldnt have to disconnect the vac. lines on the intake), then lift it off about 1 inch, make sure the gaskets are lined up between the runners/head, set it back on and first tighten the bolts that are near the runners, start on one side and alternate, dont go straight across either, then do the brakets... sometimes if you do brakets then the runner bolts, the brackets prevent the inatake from completely sealing to the head... thats what i think happened...

it should take you about a half hour if youve never removed the intake, and you dont even have to completely remove it... so probably less

Jenny, good pics. I hope to get some of my cars this weekend.

Adam, sounds good. You are welcome to crash.....

Dave, I will not ask for a ride. If I did that, I will never like my car on that track!!

I am thinking about bringing some sort of heating unit this weekend.

Dave, should I bring the easy up tent? If someone has four old rotors we can anchor it down on asphalt. Then again, they might not allow that either. Carson would be sure to let us know.

Maybe I have some old pictures somewhere, will have to look.............
