Guys,
I bought 2 of the knock off police grilles from the member on here who was selling them, can't find it in the classifieds anymore...
I am running into an issue...

Can someone help?
Issue 1
1) When painting the things, the 1000's of little holes keep coming back through the primer.. it is driving me crazy.. there are ALOT of them and I can't get them out..
Should it have had all these holes? What do I do to fill them?

2) The material these are made of seems to be more fragile than I thought.. I dropped the can of paint (1/2 full) on it and one of the bottom tabs broke.. What kind of glue should I use to reglue that tab?

Thanks for the help.. I am trying to prep it some myself, but these holes are driving me nuts.. doesn't matter how many coats of paint/primer, they just start popping back through....

for the first problem try to find some filler/primer.... it should fix that problem.... you can build it up better than regular primer and it should smooth out very well....

for the second problem, i don't know what material was used to make them, but i'm sure someone will chime in with the correct answer

Okay, dumb question, is a 'Sandable' primier like the Napa or Krylon a 'fillable' or do I need to look for one that specifically talks about fillable, because I thought I WAS getting a filler primer..
sigh..
I think I'll drop by an auto paint store tomorrow and see if they can point out what I need...

thanks...

sandable primer is not necessarily a filler primer....

a filler primer allows more buildup and is thicker, which will take care of those little holes a lot easier...

you are going to want it to say filler primer on the can somewhere

good luck

Ok to answer your questions...

1. I used sandable primer, and it took all the pits right out. You could try filler primer and if that doesn't work, buy some bondo and put a skim coat on the piece. The entire piece is sandable so you don't have to worry about any issues with that. After you're happy with the finish, you can use a sandable primer to finish it off before you paint.

2. You can glue the tab back on with a fiberglass resin.

Note: This isn't directed at anyone specifically, but I specifically stated in the group buy description that these tabs were EXTREMELY fragile. I have already replaced a couple grills due to people's stupidity when installing them. I know the issues aren't with the grills but rather people's negligence. If you drop something on them, they will break! If you slam your hood after it's been in an accident, and the clearance between the radiator and hood isn't the same, it will break! These grills aren't made out of titanium, ya know?

Thanks Doug, I will see about a different type of primer, but the pits I got out, those were no big deal, these are the air holes from when the fiberglass set and released.. and they are all on the edgest of the 6 slots and the big center hole, .. I may have to use the bondo as the pain just doesn't cover corners very well with spray.. maybe I'll brush on a cost and see if it will fill the holes...

Note, I didnt' complain about how fragile or anything.. I know I did a dumb and it got broke and it was my fault... I just need to know what will glue it back as I wasn't sure what they were made of.. now I know.. Fiberglass.. I can deal with that...
I didn't mention that my kicks knocked a folding chair over onto 1 of my grilles and the tabs survived... but another part chipped...
cry
Wouldn't be a big deal if the kids hadn't panicked about breaking dads part and hid it for a week.. the pieces are gone.. but it is at the top where with the hood closed it doesn't show.. sigh...
You live you learn..that grille goes on the project car... The tab as on the one I am prepping for my moonroof sho...
Thanks again.

Heh Heh..that is "The Dalles" as in Oregon, not Dallas, as in Texas, home of the run and hide democrats.... When I lived in Fort Worth we always had jokes about 'failed texans' moving to OK.. ... I have to snicker when I hear the democrats are hiding there.... If this offends, sorry.. but I just HAVE to laugh at the situation...

I still have my stock grille but I was wondering if anybody knows where to get the metal clips that clip in the bottom section. Mine got all rusty and broke when I had to pull my grille off so I could take my headlight housings completely out.

The clips are the same for all the grilles, so just go to any wrecking yard with some of your gen taurus in it and pull the grille and remove the clips...

There is a Dallas in Oregon also. The "The" in "The Dalles" is part of the name of the town.

if need be, and you can't find them i can try to provide you with part numbers for those as well... the store i work at carries both brands in stock
