Jason is right guys. Going with a larger MAF on even a bolt-on car isn't going to get you any HP. You need to be running some serious NA mods (3.2 cams+) to even getting close to maxing the stock MAF, probably in the 250WHp range. If ia near to stock or bolt-on SHO does run better with a different MAF that would be chalked up to dumb luck and idocyncracies in the voltage output variance between a particular unit vs. another.

Unfortunately, I have real world experience where my butt dyno said I made a big improvement, while the actual dyno said things went backwards....

BUTT dyno is very, VERY deceiving. I found this out when my car felt faster, but it was actually slower and the dyno proved it. What does this generally mean??? Your tune is CRAP :)

I had my dyno proven 214whp SHO get beat from a roll by a stock SHO...

Being happy and being better off are NOT one in the same.

I did read the italics in your post, and you made the same point I did.............that a MAF is a STEP to getting to where you want to be. I agree that if it's your ONLY mod, then your not going to see much difference. But there are NA cars that have enough bolt ons that a larger maf would get more power out of the engine.

I just detest, and disagree with the notion that "mods are pointless unless your boosted"......

Even with all the bolt-ons, most people STILL don't have the need for a larger MAF. That $200 (MAF ONLY) can be spent on gas for the same power levels.

But there are NA cars that have enough bolt ons that a larger maf would get more power out of the engine.

I can think of less than a handful... Many of them get the added power by N20, so the stock unit still works fine.

I just detest, and disagree with the notion that "mods are pointless unless your boosted"......

Now you're reading way into things... This mod is is NOT worth it's cost when you don't have the need to measure the amount of air a larger one would be capable of... There's no guess work. I don't car how the air is getting there.

Also, if you're goint to quote me, you can't add your own words/feelings in there.

If it makes you feel better spend the money and tell people you have a larger MAF. I've tuned stock cars to beat modded cars more than a few times.

yeah but wouldn't your car give you a lean code if you were running dangerously lean? i ran a 70mm cobra maf for ever in my 93 before i had it tuned, and i couldn't tell a difference before and after the tune! car seemed to like it! just my experience!

The lean codes will only be set under closed loop. It is at WOT that an untuned MAF will cause problems. But the OEM Ford programming is so rich to start with that some MAFs will kind of work. No way are they allowing maximum potential of the motor though without a tune.

Jason, you're completely missing my point! My point was that it may be a STEP in somebodys plans for bigger and better things. Which you agreed with in one of your earlier posts. Yes, there may only be a handful of shos out there with bolt ons that are in need of a larger maf.........BUT there are some.

$200 for a MAF?? Where do you buy your stuff?

Most ppl know that a SHO with a good tune is faster than a sho with a bad tune.........thanks for making that point.

Also.. I don't have a larger maf, nor am I looking to get one. The original post said what MAfs are plug-n-play.....not "are larger Mafs worth it"

IMHO there are no plug and play MAFs. They will all miss the optimum A/f ratio without being able to modify the fuel settings some how at WOT.

You may be able to tune it with one of those variable resistor things for the MAF signal but you still need a wideband O2 to see what the actual A/F mix is. Do you have a WBO2? If not you are just supposin'.

I completely understand your point... I've gone through the steps, however, if someone is planning on the basic BOS SHO, the MAF isn't going to do you any better for the most part, but it is another mod to ad to the list.

It's been awhile since I've purchased a non-lightning MAF($45 shipped for the last 90mm I bought). They generally would sell for $200 when a chip wasn't required.

To the extent of what is known for most is questionable.

STOCK is PnP! If you're NOT looking to get a larger MAF, THAT is really your option. Why the **** would you pay money to down-grade? In fact, the reference above from the OP was a 73mm and 77mm... BOTH are larger than a stock MAF.

Jason just loves to tune and tweak so much that it's his NUMBER ONE MOD. Furthermore, I believe that he thinks no other mods are worth doing until you have the ability to tune(cept maybe exhaust).

I'd have to totally agree with that, also...dangit.

In all honesty, I really am trying to help people. If I were to do it again, I wouldn't take the same route that I have. I also didn't know any better then and I'm trying to help others from wasting money too.

I know you are Jason. I can certainly see how the number one mod (after exhaust) would be a tune.

Best bang for the buck, IMO. Ford's tune had to be bland enough to work on 10,000 different motors...slated for almost any environment. It makes sence that you can improve on it without changing parts out. I also realize that you CAN get improvements from changing the MAF with out changing the tune...but it would be dumb luck...not guaranteed.

wow, what a fight! I love these threads.

Like I said, I have a Pro-flow 73mm unit, but for the sole reason that I got it for $45 off of ebay. I mean, seriously, would you pass that up? I can think of few other 'mods' for the SHO that are less than $50, silencer mod excluded. And people even debate whether that works or not. Whatever.

I agree with the tuning principle. However! The level of skill required to install, ****, even BBBs is FAR lower than the amount of skill required to properly tune a vehicle. I have a TwEECer, and I *still* don't know what the **** I'm doing. I wish I could come to your house and buy you beer or pizza or hookers or whatever so you could teach me how to tune. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure "it's a secret" translates to "nowhere near maryland". Although, if you lived in Jersey, I'd want to keep that a secret.

Knowing what i know now, I would pass it up ;)

I'm not the one who keeps the secrets. I've helped many across the country tune via e-mail, phone calls and have even had one person come to see me from one state away. I have no problem helping people tune, however, I do expect people to do some stuff for theirselves as there is a lot to learn and the better understanding you have before makes the process much easier for both of us.

Yes, a MAF is easier to swap... but is it worth it if it does nothing for you or possibly hurts your power and/or driveability???

I think people are confused here.... heres my take on it

guys say no need for a larger MAF because you aren't maxing out its capability to meter the air the engine is consuming.....

others believe the larger housing provides less restriction so you get more air to the engine........

if thats the path you want, then your best bet is probably a C&L MAF, uses the stock sensor, and has a larger housing...... THEN YOU TUNE IT....

OR JUST TUNE THE STOCK SETUP..... as pointed out, a tuned stock SHO is going to beat a stock tune SHO with a maf upgrade......

me? I sold my C&L.... everything under my hood looks stock and I kind of like that look... its cool to see how much power you can add to the SHO, and when u pop the hood it looks just like every other stock one...... I've been focusing on stuff I know helps out the engine.... exhaust... flywheel... I've been trying to acquire a pulley set for the accessories..... **** even BBB's might be a waiste of money...... if you had an extremely ported intake and head they might help..... but then again I believe their are some FI guys running the stock intake and they have no problems making assloads of power....

Yamaha wouldn't have made those air horns just to do it... **** don't engineer stuff like that

ive got the PRO-M 77mm or 80mm i don't really remember, its on my 3.2L 90 SHO with lots of bolt ons.
i might have picked up a few extra HP on the top end over the stock maf,who knows.
it did however pick up 100hp worth of intake noise.
