This is Bob at the bank and I noticed against the wall, I could hear the random knocking-clacking sound from the engine, I don't hear it when I rev the engine, like a particular valve that is slapping the head, I wondered if it is a rod that at idle, is slow enough and loose enough to sound like this...tks in advance,
T

it does not sound like the typical rod knock though, because it seems to disappear at higher revs, and it seems more random. I think it more likely a loose timing chain (bad tensioner) but I can't hear it really well cause my computer is acting up today...

thank you guys...Andrew was over today and he thought tensioner for timing chain as well///What is the danger if I just let it go for a while, as long as I'm not pushing anything too hard?? And no, no engine work yet, all I did was put things back together and started it up. This was the one that had the cps replaced and then wouldn't run.
I put wheels and exhaust on it, put the alternator back on, belts and a battery and started it up and have been working on the interior. This is the one that had broken solder joints in the alternator that I fixed.
Thanks again for your thoughts,
T

well, being sort of conservative, I would not run it with that kind of a noise. if something breaks because of whatever it turns out to be, the result could be quite expensive.

is this the blue one that was for sale in Byron, MN on craigslist? kinda goofy looking lanky kid, aftermarket pedal covers and some other 'interesting' crap going on and no battery?

i had him crank it over when I went and looked at it, sounded like a tensioner to me when I considered buying it.

pull valve covers and check.

i couldn't get the video to load on photobucket for some reason with chrome

yes, that's the one. It's looking better and as you may have read, I don't know why he couldn't get it running cause I just put it back together and it started. Anyway, I don't like the aluminum subframe bushings but for now will keep working with it. Text me if you wanna hear it and I'll send it to your phone, maybe it'll play there? I'm not going to do anything as major as pulling valve covers right now cause I'm into the body issues for the moment, and all of them need work. I got a decent hood at the jy so that's my project when my foot lets me do some work.

Did you ever find a root cause for this engine noise? My 2010 has been exhibiting the exact same noise. I took it to the dealer 2 weeks ago, they couldn't duplicate it. The noise is definitely there, I will have to schedule time with the mechanic to be with him at startup, because it doesn't seem to do it after the car is warm.
I'm at 68.500 miles, nearing the engine warranty, so I need to get this fixed ASAP!
Not sure what car this is, but mine is a 2010 MKS Ecoboost.

Anybody know anything about this noise? Thanks !

Post your question in the Gen IV section to get more EcoBoost owners to see your issue. The new turbo motors are a different animal than the older Yamaha engines.

I still haven't gone into it but am feeling pretty sure that it is the throwout bearing just randomly rattling, cause it never changes how the engine is running for over a year now, and although I haven't put on that many miles, it doesn't do anything, just makes that noise, ...but not when the clutch is in..

You can unhook the clutch cable at the top of the tranny casting and run the car with the lever on that casting in different locations.
With 2 people, you can do the same thing without disconnecting anything (the second guy does the listening).

Place a beefy screwdriver or rod on your catalytic converters, as they can be a noise source when the central honeycomb is allowed to move, usually after the wrapping burns away or unravels.

If it disappears with clutch in, extremely unlikely to be valve train related. Sounds like TOB for sure.
