Picked up a Gen III SHO...(now with pics)

Well after selling my truck and a few weeks of looking for the right car I found it today. I live just south of the Twin Citties and had to drive all the way to Wausau Wisconsin to buy it. Very nice car. It is a 1998, black with chrome wheels, charcol leather int. Needs a few very minor cosmetic things on the interior but all in all is very clean. The car has 57,000 miles on it and unfortunately from what I could find the cams are not welded but I plan to remedie that soon. I was very surprised at how quiet they are stock, that just can't stay that way ;). I closed the deal today and am going to go back to pick up the car on Saturday. I will post some pics when I get her home.

I do have a few questions though:

*Guys with Flowmaster 40 series, how do you like the sound?

If it sounds anything like a mustang they are going on as soon as I can get them!

*Is there anything else major other than the cams that I need to be concerned with?

I have done quite a bit of reading and that has been the only major concern I have been able to track down.

*Has anyone here ever used Performance Plus in Wi. for cam welding?

I see that they are in the V8SHO list but wanted to hear some personal experiance with them. Plus they are the closest to me.

Thanks!

Brian

Mine are flowmaster 40 knock-offs and they are GREAT! (My exhaust is all stock with the exception of mufflers). It has a much deeper rumble than my brothers 4.suck Cobra (with a flowmaster cat-back), and the volume is about the same.

Make sure and go to www.V8SHO.com! It is VERY helpful :D

If you want to kinda-sorta hear my exhaust, click the video link in my sig ;)

First off congrats! :thumb:

Secondly, I would install a transmission cooler as soon as possible, as the tranmissions can be unpredicatable, some last over 100k, some don't.

I know a few people that have had thier welding done at PP, PP is a great place (had work done thier on my 92) but hard to get into it. I personally would go visit Eric L. in Lomard, IL. He is also listed on the www.v8sho.com website! ;)

He is the one who welded my 98's cams, have him insulate the rear wiring harness while he's in thier also! :)

flowmasters are a MUST :thumb:
If you really want to turn some heads, then an exhaust cutout is also a must.

*2 new Flowmaster 40 series mufflers shipped to your door off ebay: $99
*One exhaust cutout from Jegs shipped to your door: $36
*EVERYONE you drive by baffled at your Taurus MUSCLE car: $PRICELESS$

Thanks guys! I ordered the Flowmaster 40 series tonight. I have a spare new B&M tranny cooler so I will take and throw that on as well. Hopefully it is not as ******* trannies as my Typhoon was :burn_out:

Yep, you'll love the 40s. Have them take out the resonator as well. Even better sound.

Also, I had my cams welded at Performance Plus in Madison. Very good to deal with, they don't usually work on Saturdays but they made an exception for me. Brought the car in at 8 or 9am. Took Doug until 1 or 2pm to weld the cams, insulate rear wiring harness, and a few other things.

There is an indoor golf dome a walk away from the shop that I spent some time in while waiting, and there's a gas station right there as well. If you walk a little ways up the road from the shop, there's a bunch of shops and a McDonalds. So you'll be okay for the time it takes to get your car back.

Check out the link in my sig to my Cardomain site. There are cam weld pictures on there showing the nice job Doug did. :thumbs_u:

Welcome to the club :salute:

I also had my cams welded at PP in Madison. I was lucky to get in right away, they may try to fit you in more quickly because of the camshaft problems, never know. They did a great job (in and out in less than 4 hours, including new plugs and a P/S flush). I still feel bad about my dad stepping on their dog though

I'm waiting for my OEM mufflers to die to put on a set of Flowmaster 40's. Then, I'm waiting for my warranty to expire to get "creative" with it :D

Gonna take a long time, 154k and still not even close to being rusted out... :bonk:

Of course I have a friend with a 96 who's left muffler is shot at 9X,***

I will throw it out there since no one else has. The Borla muffs sound really really good. :dribble: And will last a long long time. :salute:
There is also Bullit muffs, and some cheap turbos from Summit Racing that some members say sound good but may not last real long. How long, I don't know.

The borla cat back on the SHO sounds very good. It is mellow but slightly powerful sounding. While no one will mistake it for a 5L or Cobra, they will know it has 8cyls under the hood. I probably would have went with flowmasters if I didn't get a steal on the borla cat back ($300).

Cool guys, thanks for the input.

I may end up trying a couple different mufflers to see what I like. I have allways liked the sound of Flow's on Fords so I will start there (seen as how I ordered them allready) and move on if I don't like the sound of 'em.

I am leaving after work in the morning to go get her.

Can't wait........ :D

Amen to that. :salute:
Borla mufflers with the res and cat removed sounds absolutely beautiful. Not too loud, yet enough to let people know that this ain't your mom's Taurus. :)
