Okay, so I got myself re-interested in doing a catch/con can.

Right now I'm looking for the actual "can" to use. Per Paul, I think he holds the best advice and should not filter the air, but just make it come into contact with a cool metal surface to condense it.

So, would this work?

Obviously we need a can that has an inlet/outlet and also a drain. So, would that work?

Also, the inside of it should just be an empty canister with an inlet/outlet right? No internal baffling? (Filter)

Thanks.

You want one that you can open up. The one I made has the inlet and outlet on the same end. But internally there is a plastic baffle that forces the air down one side then back up to maximize the surface contact with the tank. The drain on the opposite end and it is designed top mount horizontal.

I have a basic can with the inlet and outlet at the top and the drain at the bottom. I filled it with SS wool pads from the Kitchen dept. at Target to help 'filter' the gasses.

My can is mounted inside the driver's fender about where the saxocone would normally be. I can access the drain plug without jacking up the car or removing anything.

Awesome, so what did you make the 'can' out of them? (Or I guess where did you get the parts from), Ace?

Also another quick questions,

for those of you (not including Paul :p) who do have catch/con cans, how often do you drain them?

Mine is store bought, and I've forgotten where I got it from. I drain mine weekly usually, if not sooner.

I've seen a few things about these, what exactly is the purpose of it? Why do I have the feeling I am going to get some not so plesent responses to this?

Well, from what I've compiled through my reading:

The PCV system, with the EGR valve, has a gaseous mix of air and other substances. So, when this goes through your system, it dirties the mixture, making combustion not as good. I think it also contributes to the carbon build-up.

So, when you create the PCV Catch/Condensation can, the vacuum will go through this, condense the molecules of gas you don't want recirculating and drain out of the can while the air will pass through.

V8SHO.com is really lacking in detail for this and also on how to fabricate your own.

It would be nice if someone in the know would submit a write up on this subject, the benefits of a catch can and how to make one.

Question: Does this eliminate that surge solenoid thing that is on the back of the surge tank? I am getting really tired of mine buzzing, almost sounds like a horn. It only does this after some spirited driving. I think I am talking about the right part, it has a black plastic top on it with slots and you can actually rotate the top? I think this is what is buzzing.

Well, I can answer that for you. No, it does not. The catch/con can only uses the 2 hoses right above the throttle body that connect to eachother.

I will get a picture up to show you where the intake hose for the PCV catch/con can is and the the return back to the engine.

I run the DC3 catch can on my Mitsubishi Evolution, one can to collect oil from the crank case and one to collect oil from the PCV. Not sure how this setup would work on the SHO but the guy makes dual and single can setups. Perhaps a single catch can setup for the SHO for the PCV?

On the EVO this setup keeps oil out of the intercooler and out of the intake track. The cans are fitted with a drain at the bottom to get rid of collected oil at every oil change.

Here is a link to the setup I am talking about:
