My 92, mtx is missing the right torque limiter. I've driven without it for a while. How important/effective are they. I would have already replaced it but part of the hardware is missing.

They are by design not "torque limiters," but instead, "roll dampers," as is there part name according to Ford. Their purpose is to dampen the impact of the quick motions of the engine rolling in the motor mounts during rapid transients such as drop clutch starts and shifts and mismatched engine/transaxle speed gear changes.

They are literally shock absorbers for the motor mounts. Driving without them won't change the engine or car performance, but it will probably contribute to earlier failure of the front and rear motor mounts.

It would be prudent to find replacements for them. At this point I will state that the solid torque limiters from an unnamed source are NOT a viable substitute for these components.

the solid torque limiters are fine, and they will eliminate the breakage of motor mounts. I have run them on my sho for about 2 years now and had ZERO problems

Those brackets aren't designed to handle those kind of engine forces. I broke a bracket (clear in two) with a stock damper, let alone putting a stiff/solid one in there.

Not a good idea IMHO, you should get your engine movement (or lack of) through the motor mounts. Like scott said the dampers just reduce vibration and subtle drivetrain movement/backlash. I actually had them off my old 89, but have found they reduce drivetrain chatter slightly when using an aggressive clutch material.
