So My parking brake cable snapped off and I was unable to repair it so I bought a new cable/handle/plastic assembly thingy. Currently the round plastic piece that fits against the dash with the square hole in it is still there, how can I remove it?

I crawled under the dash and couldn't seem to figure it out. I did a search and found a brief description but I still wasn't sure how to remove it. I saw a mention of a clip, where is it located and do I need a tool to get it out?

Any info would be appreciated

I am in the same boat.
I have read there is a clip on the inside dash surface that lifts straight up, but I have been unable to get my hand in there. On the GenIIs, the suggestion was to remove the light dimmer panel to get access, but I don't know if that holds true on the GenIs. I don't think the 89s have that removable panel.

Can you buy the brake release cable assembly new?

Yeah, I bought mine online, I don't remember for sure where I got it, I want to say rockauto.com I got it about 2 years ago, I just never got around to installing it since I couldn't figure out how to remove the old piece and never bothered looking into it until now.

I bought one that was made in italy off ebay.

I'm not sure if the gen 1 is the same, but as sperold said on gen 2's you remove the dimmer assembly and the clip is there. They appear to be the same cable, i'm not sure about removal.

From snooping around on the internet, it seems that the cables are grouped as follows:
1986 to 1989
1990 and 1991
1992 to 1995 ( I assume)
So for detaching from the car, you would have to know what "lock-in" method they used to secure this thing at the back of the dash.

It like a c clip, you just lift upwards on it. If I recall, you can sort of feel it from under the dash, but it helps if you remove the dimmer panel since it's right there
