The black trim around the gauges is what I want to paint. I want to paint it silver. I've seen it done before on a few different cars so I was wondering just how difficult it is to get the whole dash apart. And does that trim piece come off the gauges? Easily? I've just never seen anyone explain how its done.
TIA!

I know that the whole unit comes out with the clear lexan shield attached. I have had that part out before. I also noticed that the lexan shield comes out with 4 or 6 small 5mm hex/slotted screws. I would also guess that the black piece would come off with a couple of snaps like everything esle on the dash. Hope I helped a little.

I just had my dash ripped apart today. Got it back together though. First, you have the four screws holding a metal plate just under the steering wheel. After thats off take all the screws out of the plastic dash covering that goes around the a/c, and hold the headlight switch. There are maybe four or five. Pull it out gently but with a little force because of those stupid pins that ford always uses. Take it and rest it on top of the steering wheel and disconnect all the electrical attachments attached to it. Then the lexan shield comes off with maybe eight or nine gold hex screws, which also hold down the black plastic cover you want to paint. Hope I helped you, also might I recommend aluminum face overlays as an alternative to painting. They sell them on Ebay. Also while you have the dash ripped apart think about replacing the guage faces. I just put in Halo's that i got off of Ebay. They are nice!

Might be better to buy the overlay thats on ebay?

You could even paint that, so you could return the car to stock easily.
