The P.T.U has gone bad in my 2011 SHO. It only has 85 thousand miles. Is it very problematic to replace myself, any information or advice is greatly appreciated

Now don't ask me about replacing it and what it takes. However I would start here, this link to an infamous member of these boards made an excellent write up that will give you some history and background info you might need.

best on a lift. can be done on jackstands but more difficult.

requires above average mechanical ability/experience preferred. 5-6 hrs labor at service shop.

new ptu - check/topoff fluid before installing, and after installation. does not necessarily come with correct amount of fluid.

1st fluid change advised after 6 mo/5k miles of operation to get out breakin metals. then start the normal fluid change interval. cop cars get it every 10k miles. so 2 years/30k on the outside is a good interval for most non-racing vehicles that have this ptu.

That's the best advice right there!
Fluid changes are the key to making this drive line last.

With 100+ K miles on our 2013 MKS and all fluids have been changed multiple times and it's still OEM PTU, RDU and transmission. I am waiting for water pump and timing chains to need replacement but it's not time yet!

How many times did you change the PTU fluid? Or has it never been done?

As mentioned, it can be done from jackstands but it is not a simple task. You have to be dedicated. I did it by jackstands. Honestly, the most frustrating part was probably drilling out the exhaust stud that broke when taking the exhaust free from the pre-cats. I had tried to remove the nuts at the turbos to drop the entire downpipe, but it seemed likely they would break before coming loose, so I instead went to a location where the nuts and studs were easily accessible. I also spent too much time trying to get the PTU out without dropping the subframe. Once I decided to just drop the subframe, things were much easier.

Whether or not you can do it depends on your available tools, your patience, if you have at least two floor jacks, and your experience. Probably only you can answer if this is something you can do.
