Does anyone know or have an idea of what can cause a battery to overheat and boil the inside. My battery did that today and my EATC only kicks on at stops or low speeds.... please help TIA!!!!

Sounds like the voltage regualtor is bad in the alt.. Remove the alt. and have it checked out at Autozone or Oreilly

+1 Check it ASAP Having a battery blow up is bad. It will eat everything under the hood.

Batteries overheat due to a short circuit or over-current or over-voltage (over-charging). The electrolyte is probably not actually boiling, but releasing hydrogen (explosive gas) due to one of the above problems. Probably something you want to figure out soon before you've got a real mess on your hands.

Drive to an auto parts store that's close, they usually do free elec system checks, the meters i've used show amp out up to the battery along with voltage. If they determine the alt is bad, just replace it, I know its not the cheapest route, but if you stuck man that's about all I can tell you.

Actually... start it, see if it runs ok with the battery unplugged... I'd do that if I were you to get it home. :)

Definitely, but i'd still have his alt checked, because you don't want to find out half way home that its

Also unplugging the battery could possibly put more amps/volts to the other systems and fry those out. Won't really worry about that on an older cars such as a sho, but i have seen/heard of a lot of newer ones frying a computer by disconnecting the battery, because it needs the battery to sense the true battery voltage/charge level, and when it doesn't have this it could try to keep doing full charge to the battery.

Damn these new cars and their stupid computer controlled, newer cars have typically 2-3 computers now...I can even make a new Jeep or chevy's honk the horn every so many seconds (30-999 seconds), even without a diag computer attached. And it will keep doing it until i plug back into the comp's and shut it off, not sure if I can do it on a ford yet, but its rather interesting why would you care to have the horn honk even with out a key?

Good luck buddy. And where are you, in the Twin Cities any chance?

High open circuit voltage in a battery can be caused by the acid being stronger, this would go with the boiling the water off. If it is a sealed battery you can't add water then the battery is toast.

+1 battery replacement, then recheck your alt/charging system...the battery works like a surge protector for your electrical system, definately want to straighten out those issues...

Here is an update of some sorts... I tested the battery while engine off and it tested good, i tested alternator while engine running and it tested good but battery still seems to overheat. Slowly but surely i am losing electrical systems. First my bright beams went out, then my EATC will only come on at complete stops, now i lost my left headlight. I am really running out of ideas as to what this could be. Could there be a short, and if so any suggestions where to start looking? I am frustrated and running out of ideas... thanks in advance

If all seems good and the battery is is overheating then the battery is shorted internally.

If the charging voltage does not exceed 14.4v then all should be well.

meaning the voltage while running... i am assuming if it exceeds that number the voltage regulator in the Alt is bad and i need a new Alt... could this cause my other electrical systems to stop working tho?
