The OD button's have been known to stick or break. You need to remove it from the shift handle and find out what's wrong.

Its a Taurus...
grab it with some pliers or pry it out, I did this with my 93 atx and moved it in and out a bunch if times and it uncrudded itself and works great now.
I should specify, don't pry it off the shifter, just pull it out a mm or 2. Also the OD should reset and turn back on when you restart the car so it's not THAT big of a deal, don't freak out to bad
