I recenly sold my 93 sho and am looking at the gen iii for a replacement. I looked at one last night with 100 kms on it but it had a noise coming from the cam sprocket area? Humming like a bad bearing in a pulley? Is there someone in Ontario that does the cam welding? or someone that is close by in the States that does this? I would highly consider the pinning by the sho shop but would be without a car for a month or so I would estimate which doesn't really work for me. Any suggestions in places or any other comments would be great.
Thanks Eric

If it is a ticking, it is the cams. Can you get a sound byte of it? FWIW, stay away from SS for pinning. There have been many an arguement on it, but I know someone welded a cam that was pinned by SS and the pin melted. Wedling is a cheaper, arguably better option.

If it is already ticking I would suggest avoiding it unless you are getting it free. There are plenty of gen 3 SHO's in Ontario, I recently saw a black 98 with 135,000 kms on it for $9900. Which annoys the crap out of me because I bought my 99 Sable for that price a year ago with 137...

Sheesh.. you can have mine for like $6500CDN if you want to come to Nova Scotia. Visit the hurricane destruction. :)

No cam noises and not welded.. 121k kms. Nice 96 Toreador Red. *hint hint nudge nudge*

Have to get something better on gas for my wife's new commute *grumble* .. so I'm either gonna trade it or sell it privately (no takers yet... ) frown

Mickey, where in Nova Scotia are you? I am a bit south of Bridgewater. Is yours the one that is in Truro? There is another red '96 that used to be down Liverpool way, but last I heard it had the cam problem.

Don't know about Canadian welders but I can help you start pinpointing the other part of your post. Three things to look at up there. First off engine will run without the serpentine belt though the alternator won't charge so don't let it run very long. Might try that to verify the noise is in fact one of the belt pulleys as I suspect. The alternator is a weak part on this area. Many have had the housings crack causing the bearing to wear uneavenly. Another consideration but not much more expensive is the power steering pump. It is located in the valley in the middle of the heads. And the most likely if you are thinking "cheap" would be the idler pulley. A few have complained about them giving out but I personally have never seen it.
Good luck and get them cams welded.

Steven: Yup that's me in Truro.

Time to retire the old girl. Just traded it in this morning (the dealership actually gave me more money than I was asking privately..). Got the wife a loaded TDI Beetle. If she kept commuting in the SHO she would have had to fill it every 3 days. :(.. neddless to say the gas savings will easily pay for the Beetle and then some!
If ya'll want to know where to pick up a nice 96 SHO I can give you the name of the dealer. They will have posession on Monday *sniff* frown

Sorry to hear it, Micky. Jeannie and I took a trip up to Cape Breton to hike the Cabot Trail for a few days last week, and on the trip up, around, and back, I got 10km per liter average, which is, let me think, 25 mpg, I believe. That is very mixed driving, considering all the up and down in the highlands. What mileage were you getting?

Stephen: Well, it was less than 500kms per tank, which is about 10L/100kms which isn't bad.. but getting less than 5L/100kms, cheaper fuel plus a car with warranty (I was a little paranoid about the SHO in all honesty!), it kinda made sense... now I'm looking for a Gen I or Gen II SHO for a winter beater. wink
