Is it okay to replace the oil pan seal while the engine is hanging from the clutch service supports? I have the car apart again; going to put the oem flywheel back on after it is resurfaced. The seal is leaking on the flywheel side at the botttom of the "U" curve.

Thanks.

Sure, it would be easier, since the subframe is out.

And while you are at it, you might as well change out your rod bearings if you havnt already thumb

The car only has about 105k miles on it and has seen regular oil changes and no abuse. The engine is strong and sounds great. I'd like to hold off on the bearing job for now.

I researched the rod bearing procedure, but don't have a clear mental picture of what extra steps need to be taken when just replacing the seals. Is the "oil sender"(?) the only thing that needs to be removed? Will it need a new gasket? Anything else?

Thanks.

do the bearings. They are there, ready to be replaced when the pan is dropped. Plus, The rod bearing job has actually become a recommended 60-100k maintenance item.

As for parts...

All you really need is oil pan seals, and a tube of RTV to re-seal the pan. If the oil sender seal is still in decent shape, re-use it.

My '89 still has the original oil level sender and seal.

If you choose to do the rod bearings, you will need the Clevite rod bearing set, and a new oil pickup tube to oil pump gasket.

BTW with your clutch job, you ar changing the rear main seal as well right?

Thanks for the help. The rear main was replaced the first time. This is my third time on this job because of the POS Fidanza.
