When I pull the boot on the spark wire off the plug there is a generous amount of oil on the boot... enough to be dripping off. There is nothing wrong with the way the car is running and the oil is filled to the correct level. Is this normal for a 3.0 motor?

-I just realized I posted this in the wrong section... My Apologies! I reposted in the correct section!

unfortunately, if you want to fix this issue yourself, you'll probably need to go out and get a valve cover gasket set. I just got a fel-pro set from a local auto parts store and it includes gaskets for the covers, and the 6 circular gaskets that seal the plug wells.

The seal is important because the oil can damage the plug wires (infact, you should replace those as well...along with the spark plugs). It can also lead to misfires which hinder performance and make the engine run rough. The plug well seals on my dads 93 are so bad, the wells have a generous amount of oil (enough to come flinging out and oozing off the plug wires if you pull them out). It idles horrible as well..and often has a pretty bad hesitation when accelerating (almost as if there are 3 distinct power bursts when running up through the rev range).

I myself am in the process of doing a pretty thorough tune up. I'm replacing plugs, valve cover gaskets and plug well seals, wires..and O2 sensors...as well as cleaning out my whole intake. It's a pretty involved process, but well worth your time.

These parts CAN be expensive though, check out my thread about my tune up experience and you'll see you can easily spend a few hundred dollars just for some basic maintenance.

If you do a search for something along the lines of "oil in the plug wells", you come up with a lot of useful info, and why this is definately not a normal (or good) thing.

^^^^my tune up thread, check out the prices for those parts..so far i've spent about 30 bucks for plugs (get motorcraft AGSP32FM, the box of 6 is labeled AGSP32FMF6, stock number 6111), 100 dollars for wires, 100 dollars for Bosch 02 sensors (a good investment if you dont know how old yours are), roughly 130 for valve cover gasket set and intake manifold gasket set...theres probably more, but i know i'm forgetting something...

the valve cover gaskets from my local parts store are well over 100 dollars, you can get them for less from bittersweetsho and a few other sources, i'll be buying them from bittersweet most likley since they mainly deal with shos and have a good reputation of knowint the cars.

Or you could call anpother SHO vendor....we've got them on the shelf.

BTW, DON"T USE ANYTHING BUT MOTORCRAFT PLUG WIRES. None of the others will work. They might work at first, but you'll be replacing them again soon. Same goes for the plugs.

Just my opinion, but it comes from experience.

I agree with SHO Dude on the Motorcraft wires/plugs. Tried to deviate and after a short time, went to the M/C wirs/plugs and never had another problem. Changing wires is a must if they have been subject to bad plug well seals. :thumb:

I've heard many times that the A/C delco wires held up pretty well, and I used autolite plug wires in mine, and those held up fine. Just my 2 cents...
