I have a 89 mtx and there is always fresh oil on the bottom of my starter. I tried cleaning it off to see were it is coming from, but i couldnt really tell, anyone else have this problem. oil pan gasket maybe? whats weird is my friend owns an 95 mtx with almost every seal/gasket new, but his has oil on the starter also, he suggested that maybe it was the oil cooler. im pretty sure my oil filter is not leaking, any help would be greatly appreciated.

My money's on the filter since it's directly above the starter. I always end up dripping some down onto the starter when I change my oil/filter.

When you pull the oil filter, there is a 30mm bolt head that holds the oil cooler to the block. Tighten that up and screw another filter on tight and you should be good.

Are your valve cover gaskets leaking?

Valve covers is a possibilty, but that's a long ways for it to go without just burning off, unless it's one **** of a leak.

Been dealing with this for years. I'm planning on fixing it today. As I have read and been told that the gasket behind the oil cooler goes bad. I was just checking in to confirm the 30mm nut. Replace with a gasket from an oil filter. Very deceiving oil leak because it goes into the starter. It has killed 3 starters in less than 3 years for me. I just thought it was a loose filter dripping. When you remove the starter and let it sit so it can drain you will find a good size puddle of oil.
