Help, my 94 3.2 atx is leaking oil from around the cam-postion sensor and it dripping onto the catylitic converter and smoking.

How hard is it to replace that seal and how do I do it?

Can anyone help???

same as the work involved in doing the timing belt/cps/water pump...the seal is a 3.00 part at AZ that is replaced when you do the others. Rather than me type all the step by steps, you can search here or go to www.shotimes.com to find a procedure/

oil leak

Thanks, but I have already replaced the timing belt when the water pump went out.

I would like to know if there is an easy way to fix it.

I didn't find anything on shotimes.

Thanks.

You need to remove the cam gear to get to the seal. That means the timing belt has to come off. It is not a difficult job and it is posted on SHOTimes. Clicky here - After step 20 you can access the camshaft position sensor and its seal on the rear cylinder head. Piece of cake! :thumb:

you have to pull the the intake, CID, timing belt cover(s), timing belt, cam gears and then some put a screw carefully(not to scratch the seating surfaces), into the cam seal (there are 3) and pull them out. some have used an ABS pipe (something the exact outside diameter of the seal), to push a new seal in.

search on shotimes or sho phoenix project or here to find more info.

How much time do you expect for the job?
The CPS and timming belt were replaced, but I think those seals and maybe some others too are leaking. I loose 1 quart every 1k miles, and I kind of destroyed my driveway in a year. It also can get really smokey under the hood, and that's not funny.

yea thats a lot of oil. Just add about 20-30 minuites to the time it took you to pull the timing belt off the first time. 6 bolts for the cam gears, 2 for the sensor, and your there. Get the seals from Ford, I hear they're a little better with rotating seals.

I just finished this project. You DON'T HAVE TO TOUCH the timing belt, the cam chains, or even the valve covers for that matter. The cam positioning sensor is on the front of the engine on the right side, right adjacent to cylinder number 1 ...on the camshaft nearest the firewall, on the camshaft end nearest to the the passenger side.) The cam positioning sensor is held on with two 7/32 bolts. Under that is an aluminum collar held in place with two 9mm bolts. The cam position is sensed from a stamped steel collar that is screwed to the end of the camshaft You have to take off that stamped steel collar, which is held in place by two Phillips head screws, in order to get to the cam seal. I had my battery out, so that is helpful. Take out the battery and the battery tray. But, you DON"T HAVE TO take off the top timing belt cover. You DON"T HAVE TO touch the timing belt. ALL that you have to take off is (1) the cam positioning sensor; (2) the aluminum collar; (3) the stamped steel sensing collar; and (4) the seal it self. I had a metal seal that did not want to come out. A screw would not drive into the metal seal, either. But, I was able to center punch the seal, and after drilling a very small hole into it, was able to pick it out. It took the lion's share of my time getting the seal out as opposed to getting to the seal.
