Hey all, I've had my 93 MTX since new. All maintenance has been good. Have never had to add oil between regular 3k changes.

All of a sudden I'm using a quart every 1k miles, for the last 4k miles, and there's no evidence of a leak. Around the time this started it also started running a little more "coarse", not badly enough to be diagnosable and not throwing any codes.

Any thoughts? TIA,
- Jeff

miles? did you switch weights or go to conventional? check the plug wells? Have you gone on long-distance runs? 60k overdue?

I had a 93 MTX, 114k when purchased, 124k when sold. used 2 qts on the way to maine one trip. Around town, it was 1 qt / 2 weeks. Never found where it was going.

My car does the same thing. I'd say i have to put in a quart every 1500 miles. I called a garage in the area about it and these guys are supposed to be unbelievable. What they told me to do is to to a hill. Go down hill in second gear and go like 50 or 60. If you see blue smoke coming out, ven slightly, then it's a ring, and I'll be damned, thats what it is. My car is the same way as yours. No sign of leaks and never see an odd color smoke coming from the exhaust (until i did the second gear thing.) Hope this helps.

Hi Fred! I'm @ 117k, the first time ever adding oil was just ahead of a change at 115k. No changes other than lower duty cycle (it's semi-retired) and that coarseness. 60k and all other maintenance done within 30 minutes of needed (j/k!).

The amount of consumption doesn't bother me, only that it changed. I've been figuring on putting a bit into this car (LSD, Al FW, Y-pipe, SFC's Koni's etc) and am now concerned.

SHOemup that's a good test - lightly loaded at high RPM. Suddenly worried my cats have started to break up and put ceramic dust into the cylinders, giving me ring trouble...

could also be a seal,,, mechanic was explaining to me,,, i didnt really understand,,,,,,,,, sounded like he said main seal is leaking oil,,, and i told him that there was nothing under the car in the garage,,,,, and he told me that it will only leak when the engine is running and there is oil pressure,,,, so it is probably all over the road

Nice suggestions, a Ford service advisor told me once that it was normal for a Ford with high mileage to go about 2 quarts low between changes and said it happens to his mustang. Um, the engine isn't made by ford.

Both my 93 mtx and my brother's 92 consume enormous amounts of oil. He goes through about a quart a week, and me a quart every 2 1/2 weeks. My dad said it happens on a lot of high mileage cars. I dunno, but right now I have other things to worry about, like where all my coolant is going

I had similar problems with adding oil. Didn't see the leak - was told it was a main seal leak and it onlyleaks when running. That is a big job to fix too....

I go through oil about every 2,500 miles, but I think I just burn mine off.

My 95 MTX goes through about a 3/4 per 3000 miles which I think is acceptable. Ever since switching to my faithful Pennzoil, the oil stays golden longer and seems to dissappear slower.
Whatever you do don't use that oil that's "made for higher mileage cars". My brother used it in his 89 SHO because his was burning oil. Well, after using this crap, it burned twice as much oil.

From what i've read on this forum...Pennzoil is not good for our motors. As far as "high mileage" oils, I use valvoline max life. I went from a quart and a half every 3k to 1/2 quart, and my gas mileage improved.

The characteristics detailed and the sudden onset of the problem strongly imply that the oil control ring in one of the cylinders has stuck and is no longer functioning. Oil guides and seals tend to be a long term build up problem, though it is easy to miss the start of it if you do not check your oil levels a lot.

There is nothing unususal about any of these problems. They are all associated with normal wear and tear.

It was stated, on another forum, that the oil pump in the SHO pumps at high volume and the cheaper filters just run in the bypass mode (no filtering of the oil). Does anyone agree with this hypothesis?
Also, the PureOne by Purolator has a bottom bypass valve (some say not good), but the Motorcraft, made by Purolator , for Ford, has a top bypass valve.

I have to put a quart in about 2000 miles after each oil change. Last time was at the Tristate meet just when we were going on our fun run. DOH!

i dont think the high miles issue should have anything to do with oil consumption,,,, my pop has a 97 intrepid,, 350 000 miles,,, and it loses no oil,. and i know a guy with a 275 000 mile sho,,, and he is losing no oil,,, it must be the seal,,, or your burning it,,,, i use about a quart every 1000,,, mechanic told me it was the seal,,,,

Of course it has something to do with the wear that comes with the miles. Some engines are just better cared for than others and don't wear as quickly.

Regarding the use of Pennzoil, here are the 120,000 mile service photos from an engine using Castrol GTX 10W-30 every 3,000 miles (mine) and one using Pennzoil. You make the call as to which oil you want to lubricate your engine with.

well those pictures sure do sho a difference in the quality of oil,,, but im sayin tat an engine with high miles if using the proper oil should not burn oil,,, of course if u put crap in the engine it will die soon...
