EEK! My repair bill from failed attempts at getting my car to start up and I'm out of ideas! :( Here's the situation: From time to time, my car would have trouble starting (turning over 5-10 times before it'd start). Until, one morning, the car just wouldn't start at all: no tuning over, no ticking. I still was getting battery power and all of the electrics worked (headlights, radio, a/c, etc...) but the starter wasn't doing its job. Naturally, i thought the starter had died, the solonoid had siezed, or the connections on the (old style) starter had corroded. So, easily enough, i put in a new starter. And, as all SHO stories go, the car still isn't starting. I had actually taken the car to a mechanic to do the job, since the starter required an impact wrench to get off. Since then, the mechanic has installed 3 new ignition switches, thinking that was the problem. No dice. Interestingly enough, he can "jump the starter" and get the car going, but that doesn't really help the situation. The mechanic was hoping that it was some sort of engine disabler (alarm system?) that was on the car that neither of us knew about/could find...but that's pretty unlikely. Do you guys have any ideas?

Need to know the year and tranny....

What does "jump the starter" actually mean?

Questions:

If an MTX, there is an interlock switch that completely disables the starter. MTX?

Does the starter click or otherwise make ANY noise when the key is turned to start?

has your mechanic checked for excessive current drop across the cables? A test procedure is listed here: http://www.spmotorsports.com/starter_troubleshoot.html

ohh, thanks for the quick replies! It's a 94 MTX. thumbs_u
there is no clicking when the key is turned, and he did check for current across the wires.

i'm not exactly sure how he "jumped the starter", but it looked almost like he was "hotwiring" the car, he could start it up from underneith the dash without turning the key shrug

just got back from the mechanic--is it bad when i tell him that "I got a good piece of advice" and he says "what, junk the car?" He told me it can't be the clutch-interlock, because no power is getting to it. And for what it's worth, he was starting the car by bypassing the ignition switch.

Go ahead and junk it.

I'll haul it off for free! :D

Depends on which wires the mechanic is jumping...

The yellow wire at the ignition switch should be always hot, via the IG SW/BL MTR fuse in the underhood fuse box (60 A). He should verify that fuse is good if he hasn't already. The switched output of the START switch contacts is the white/pink wire. That wire leads to the clutch interlock switch, then to the starter via a red/lt blue wire.

I wonder if any of those three switches ever caused the starter to be energized...

Unfortunately, those tests of the cables can only be performed with the starter operating. If he can hotwire it, he probably didn't check the cables since no check is indicated. Diagnosis of the starter switch circuit sounds appropriate.

When i got my Sho, i drove it 5 hours home and then it died, luckily for me my uncle is the C.O.O of one of the biggest ford dealerships on the east coast. He had it towed to sayville ford where the mechanic with the most sho experience became clusterfucked. the engine would crank and crank and crank, but nothing would happen. they ripped the tope end of the motor apart and found nothing. when they went to throw some new belts on it, the noticed a wire behind the water pump had come loose on the water pump pulley and was rubbing on it. they fixed the wire and remounted it as it should be and voila my sho runs. but it took almost a week to figure out what was wrong with it.

That would have been the harness to the crank sensor. Exact same symptom as if the sensor had failed.

Ok I had this problem, Where I jumped my mechanic jumped my starter to get it to run. When I turned the key it wouldn't even crank. Turns out I had a cut off switch from ford -(which I didn't know at the time and the guy I had bought the car from had past away. His wife never knew. Well turns out I accidently had touch it to the off position somehow and luckily my mechanic stumbled on the switch.email me
