ok, there is a trans am that just transfered into my class (a fellow club member so he'll be at every event from here on out). at the test and tune, i beat him by about a second. however, he just bought new wheels and Hoosier R6's 275/ somethingorother.... .. um.. pretty sure i'm gonna lose because i can't get my quaife installed untill next weekend. anyone got any ideas on how i can drop some time otherwise in the mean time? i'm guessing those tires should be worth a good 2 seconds so that puts me a second down...

 wish i had more money...

more rubber, more HP.....
I wouldn't worry that much about it. One time I took 2 sets of tires to an autocross. Ran the morning session with Falken Azenis rt-16, and the afternoon session with the Hoosier A6. Both in nice dry weather. I wanted to see how much faster the Hoosiers were.

To my surprise, the Hoosiers were only 0.6 sec faster. Maybe I just sucked that day, but I couldn't believe it. I thought I was driving the **** outta the SHO.

The bottom line is your driving makes a helluva lot more difference than the tires. The Falkens are already highly competitive. The rest is up to you.

Meantime, hurry up and get that Quaife installed. :) That will make more difference than any tire you can buy.

I don't know whether this holds for autox, but in TT here it's pretty consistent that everybody sets faster times in the morning that in the afternoon. Our first session is "warm-up" and doesn't even count for time or records, and it's pretty typical to set fastest times during that session and then times get slower as the day wears on.

So it could be that the morning sessions were just faster, anyway, but the Hoosiers still gave you a benefit in the afternoon. Next time try the Hoosiers in the morning and the Falkens in the afternoon, the delta might get quite a bit bigger.

burnouts are not allowed in the paddock/grid area. so that's out. the only plan i have is if i still have huge problems putting power down in the corners i may unhook my front sway bar for half the day and see how that goes.

and don't worry, this Diff IS getting installed next weekend. i can't wait.

Actually it's the opposite in autocross, at least here in the NW. The mornings are often too cold for optimal traction, and the course (which doubles as a parking lot) is covered with fine debris.

By the afternoon, temps have warmed a little, and the course is cleaner after so many hundred runs have taken place, so traction improves. Also folks that ran in the morning "know" the course better, so they usually get faster times. When I run the same tires the whole day, my times are usually 1 to 1.5 sec faster in the afternoon.

That being said, it baffles me that the Hoosiers were not that much faster, especially in the afternoon. You could make the argument they were even slower than the Falkens, given the expected 1-1.5 sec delta. As I recall, temps were in the 40-50's, so maybe it was still too cold for them. Or it could be those Falkens are just a really, really good tire. I dunno.

I actually did this for awhile before getting the coilovers. It did seem to help a little bit.
