just yesterday, i decided to go through the light that i normally take a left at on my way home. Im glad i did, because as i came to a stop, i realized i was right behind a black 99! so i tap my horn a few times and get his attention. I point to my car and he gives me a big thumbs up. We cross the intersection and pull over into a parking lot. Turns out, he has mods (K&N, cat-removed, flasher) all done by Doug Lewis.

I never realized that simply adding a K&N could make the v8 sound so MEAN!! Ive been kinda debating getting one or not, but now ive made up my mind.

just thought id share the highlight of my week with ya'll.

By K&N do you mean cone filter or just a drop-in? If its just a drop-in you won't hear any difference in sound at all. Unless he also had removed the 'saxocone.'

The general consensus on the cone filter is that its great in cool weather but sucks (literally, sucks hot air) when its warm out. Gen 3s are dogs in the heat to begin with and don't need any more hot air shoved down the intake.

its a cone, and a big cone at that. took up the entire stock filter box space.
I plan on getting one of those boxed-in cones, so i can still draw air from outside the vehicle. But.... is that going to muffle out the sound just like the stock filter box?

the "removed cat" is what gave the car a more macho growl. If you heard the mean sound from outside his car then that is why.
Save your $ on the K&N. For FREE you can get the MEAN intake growl (from inside the cabin) when the secondaries open up. Just remove the ENTIRE saxacone... leaving a hole at the air intake box air inlet.

Which essentially does the same thing as the "box" for less money. Still drawing air from the outside, as you were stock, just without that maze of a mess in the fender wall.

uhhh taking all the tubing off so the airbox directly draws air just makes the airbox draw in from mostly from the engine compartment, warm air. i used to run like this, but put the tubing back on and i could notice a difference in the buttdyno. now this was during the summer, and here in Va summers are very humid, so noticing a difference IS possible.
i leave the stock tubing from the airbox but cut off everything from where the tube hits the fender and down. was going to get wider tubing for more/smoother air flow, but im lazy and its only a duractec. still sounds loud.

I cant help but agree that removing the saxacone will draw some, therefore warmer, air into the hole from the engine compartment. but that is still better than a k&n cone, which sucks way more warm air than my box would without the sax.

Its so cold here right now that im just going to take it off, ill give an update after the weekend.

Thanks

Porterize it and you will get sound with cold air, you won't be disappointed. Cost about $10.

I need to calibrate my MAF with the SCT Advantage software. It will be interesting to see how close it is to what I need with the big filter in the fender I've been running for years.

Its finally off! It took me a while to get that mess of tubing out of there, but i eventually got it. What a difference! Its quite suprising how much of that deep throaty sound is muffled by the sax. this upgrade is definitely worth the time and mo.... wait a minute, its FREE! sweet....

I like how you cant really tell unless you get on it, very cool sound.
thanks guys.
