The brakes on my 2013 MKS are awesome most of the time, but when they get hot, they get very noisy. I bought it at 30k miles (now 35k), so I suspect these are the stock pads & rotors. Is this noise normal for the stock brakes?

I'm hoping to cure it with a simple pad change. Its a daily driver that might make it to the track once or twice. I don't want to change the rotors if possible. Do you think a good quality pad like EBC greens will do the trick?

Thanks!

If you don't want to change rotors don't go the track. It's probably best practice to replace both pads and rotors given the mileage and who knows how it was driven. I would at least consider front rotors and get a good look at the rears.

Not infrequent for rotors and pads to wear unevenly, partly due to sticking slide pins & such. The outer surface and pad may look good, but the inner surface and the pad may be goners. Also, you would be surprised how many rotors when pulled off have prominent RUST on the inner surface.

In short, the only way to know is to do a thorough inspection of ALL the rotors and pads. I would not replace just the pads, replace the rotors as well. Greenstuff is basically ... ummm ... useless IMHO. If you do not track, Redstuff will work. But Redstuff has been known to break apart on heavy track usage. Yellowstuff is probably the minimum I would put on. The other option is to get police pads for the SHO/Police Interceptor and use those instead. Raybestos is a brand I hear mentioned frequently there.

As was mentioned, if you're even considering an occasional track day, go with Yellow or Blue EBC. Same with Hawk and Carbotech, although Hawk HPS, or better yet, HPS 5.0 could take an occasional track day. I prefer the HP+, but I don't care about noise or dust. Carbotech 1521 could take an occasional track day, but AX6 would be better. XP10/XP8 are the best, though.

Get new front rotors, just stock blanks. Another option is, if they aren't grooved, take them to any brake shop and have them do a cleanup pass. If they're within spec, should only cost $10-$20 for the pair.

Just an update in case someone has a similar issues.

I didn't need to change anything. The fronts looked great. Pads were new and rotors were very smooth (obviously just serviced before I bought the car). The rear rotors have some light grooves in them and while the pads have plenty of life let in them, they were very dirty. The slot in the pads was full of junk and the same around the edges. I cleaned them up with a wire brush and 90% of the noise is gone.
