i drove my sho today to my girlfriends. Well she wasn't at her grandmas so i went to back up and no REVERSE? i had just backed up like 15 miles ago out of my own driveway. I am just thinking that maybe the shifter just wont go into reverse or something about a syncro. But it shifts fine from first to 5th. I did grind 5th by accident when i shifted to it once. isn't 5th and reverse on the same shaft???

HELP ME its my only means of transportion!!!

Thanks

Fifth gear has its own shaft. Reverse gear is really just an idler type gear that fits between the input shaft and the main shaft to rotate the main shaft in the opposite direction. The gears of the reverse path have straight cut teeth and no synchronizer, hence the ability to grind when shifting into reverse in a a hurry.

I have to ask if the shifter moves into the reverse position normally. You acnnot shift from fifth to reverse due to a lock-out feature. The thought of breaking the straight-cut gears of the reverse train is met with a head shake. It would be very hard to damage the gears. It would be more likely that trying to force the shifter into reverse could damage the shift gate or fork. Have you forced the shifter into reverse?

You probably just experienced "lock-out". I get that sometimes. Just put it in first, roll forward a foot or so, then hit reverse. Works everytime.

got some great news. I still have reverse! My friend was with me and i forgot that i didn't have reverse and i put it in there. so i looked back and i wasn't moving. Then he said hear you dont have it, unknowing that i was haveing problems hits the shifter hard and it goes in.

Here's the thing, its is sometimes hard to get out of reverse. You have to back up and at the same time pull it out of reverse with the clutch in. So i thinking is in the shifter. I still have the cable shifter but it goes fine into anyother gear.

My 89 did that to me a couple times. Try going from 1st to reverse like Rob94 said. Every standard Ford i have driven you have to do that.
