the dimmer switch on mine is a bloody nightmare. when you releasethe parking brake it knocks it up so the dome lights are on, then you try to turn it down, one 1/10th of a degree and the dome lights go out, 1/10th more, and all the dash lights go out. those idiots that replaced the heater core screwed everthing up, even lost several bolts and even the radiator shroud!

I work in a chevrolet garage, I know it isnt a chevy, but the 1500 series trucks have the same problem. Faulty Rehostats in the headlight switch cause this on the truck. They get dirty and lose contact or simply short out. The auto headlamp and dimmer switch basicaly the same thing. Only way to test it/fix it on the truck is to replace the switch.

I have also seen the auto headlamps adjusted so high that the headlights come on in any weather condition day or night causing the dashlights to dim to the rehostat setting.

I know a truck and a SHO are nothing alike, but the symptons are darn near Identical. Hope this helps.
