Hey all! I just bought my first SHO a 94 mtx with 82,000 and I drove it home today. Home for me was almost 1,000 miles away (Missoula to Fargo) so I have had plenty of time with the car to get to know her a little. I have a few questions though. There seemed to be a ticking comming from my injector rail after about 400 miles today. it wasnt loud though I couldnt hear it in the cabin just with the hood up. I was wondering how much noise is allowable by this engine? I also wanted to know if a small whine is normal in second gear on mtx's? The car was looked over by one of my families friends and North Dakotas highest paid technician before I left on my trip and he said the car wouldnt need a shim adjustment for a while because he has done all the work on the car since it was new and the car had been meticulously maintained all its life. If anyone can answer one or both of my questions a thanks goes out to you in advance.

ps. I really like this car so far and enjoy the power and comfort.

Welcome to the wonderful world of SHO's!! thumbs_u
My first suggestion to you would be to obtain the specific maintenance that had been previously done to your vehicle. My second/last/best suggestion would be to look up topics using the search engine feature on this site. I think you will quickly find that almost any question, on every subject has been covered. For instance...search "fuel injector noise", and I'll bet you find many postings pertaing to this. Once you have exhausted these, and if you still have ???, ask away!! :)

MUSTANGDUDE,

The fuel rail itself has no mechanical parts that can "tick".

However, the six injectors attached to the fuel rail all tick as they open and close. The fuel rail is bolted to the heads, wherein the valves "tick" to a degree, and the sound may be resonating through the fuel rail.

Try a mechanics stethescope, $10 at Auto Zone, and see if you can locate the offensive sound.

As for the whine in the second gear, a certain amount of whine is normal. If the whine is excessive, there are additives that other forum members swear by (or swear at as the case may be).

Any forum members want to chime in here and recommend your favorite MTX additive? I like Lucas products, and Auto RX comes highly recommended. Anybody else? rangerj

Probably sounds normal. Try lifting up on the back of the clutch pedal lightly to see if it makes the whining stop. If not than I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it does than it might be clutch or tob related.
Welcome to the forum by the way. Are you from Missoula or from Fargo?

Welcome! Like OHSHO said, you should really check the past records to verify if it has had the 60K service. Doesn't mean you have to do it if it hasn't been done, but you will need to soon. Plus, if it has had the 60K service, you wont need to get all the stuff you need for it.

This forum is full of stored info. The search will more than likely net you the best result.

I think the ticking noise is "somewhat" expected, but???

I have all of the maintainence papers with the car the guy that owned the car before me was always sure to keep maintainence papers in his glove box. the car just got a clutch 11k ago and I have the60k scheduled for july at my dads shop in Fargo, By the way I live in missoula Munkee. Im now pretty confident that all the quirks in the car are normal for a car with 82 thousand miles, although I would like to check the tranny fluid like you guys said how would I go about this? What I really want to do is put GM synchromesh in it but Im not sure how much this would cost.

talk to a member on here called SHOjuan i beleive he may have synchromesh if i remember correctly but do a search for it in know it was recently discussed. I definatly prefer redline fluid very smooth shifts.

To check the fluid when you crawl in the car in the drivers side you will see the tranny like right above your head. on the front facing the bumper you will see a large screw with a square head that the small extension on a 1/2" socket wrench will fit into.(you may need a cheater bar as it is in there rly tight with either teflon or loctite) when you stick your finger in the hole the fluid should kome up to the bottom of the hole itself that is when it is full.
