I only have the amp w/ no sub. I think rear speakers are about to go out, can i buy new 6X9 speakers for the rear and hook them up, and the amp will still work?

You can keep the stock amps as-is and replace every speaker in the car. The rear is a 6x8, not a 6x9. YOu can replace them with either 6x8 or 5x7 speakers from several manufacturers including JL Audio, Infinity, Kenwood, Pioneer, etc. I have never tried a 6x9 but I would guess you could cut the rear deck for clearance and install them

Most aftermaket 6x9 speakers will be sorely underpowered by the stock amp. I am currently running the amp through my Alpine CDA-7892 and it only allows me to go to 18 on the dial before distortion occurs. qwik huh is correct; factory speaker size is 6x8 but minor modifications (read: a drill) are all that is needed to fit 6x9 speakers.

I would recommend upgrading the headunit to start, or posting a WTB ad for some replacement stock speakers if that is all you need. Good luck. YMMV.

I also planned on putting 6x9s in my SHO. I looked today, and the stock plugs have 4 wires running to the 6x8s. How would I splice in the new wires for my aftermarket 6x9s?

that doesn't make sense it should only have 2 wires going to it. I knnow in the GEN I JBL sound system there is actually a 6x9 then a 5x7 on top of that. mabey those two other wires go to a speaker on top.

The JBL equipped cars (not the plain-jane Premium Sound) have dual wires. I have heard many people on this list and off it talk about their JBL systems being wired for amplified usage and for bypassed usage.

Go grab a multimeter. One set should have power and one should not.

I paid $270 for my Alpine and it doesn't play anything but CDs. In car audio, "cheap" is under $200. Under $400 or so is considered middle of the road to lower middle! Believe me, you can spend quite the chunk of change on a headunit!
