Hey Guys,
As you can see i am new to this forum, But I Was on the caraudio.com forum for quite a while.

But anyway, I just purchased my first SHO it is a 92' pearl green MTX, it has dual exaust and flowmasters, and tinted windows. These are the only mods I know about. I got it for $2000 and it has 180K miles on it. But now on to the questions, I'll go from most noticable to least noticable problems.

First the brakes pulse, i assume this is from warped rotors and I wonder if just getting the rotors turned and new brake pads would fix the problem.

Second, the car seems to surge during acceleration, im not sure how to explain it, but it feels almost like a bad automatic tranny if you know what i mean. like the power just kinda drps off for a split second, then comes back, what might this be?

And last it is kind of a bear to shift, like sometimes it wont go all the way into second or fourth, and grinds a bit going into reverse. I have read that maybe synthetic fluid can help this, is it true? Thanks, get back to me as soon as possible please,

they didnt make automatic transmissions in 92' you must have a 93 (93-95 were ATXs) Im betting. Sounds like the tranny is started to go out judging by "kind of a bear to shift, like sometimes it wont go all the way into second or fourth, and grinds a bit going into reverse". The ATX trannys especially in 93 dont seem to last too long at all. You should start doing some research and consider doing a 60K service judging by the surging.

an automatic tranny shouldnt grind when going into gears

i think he meant to say he has an MTX

the surging could mean you need a new fuel filter (start there it's the cheapest part to replace)

and it usually will always grind when shifting directly into reverse (it's non synchronized)

try shifting into second then over to reverse

and check the tranny fluid level

The surging on acceleration is most likely due to a dirty of failing MAF sensor. Does the car have a K&N air filter? Do you have any maintenance records?

Hey thanks for replying so quik, i did mean to say 92' MTX, sorry.

And how do you check tranny fluid on a 5 speed?

And do you still think the tranny is dying now that it is a manual?

And I dont have service records or anything so im on my own.

Please keep replying.

There is a fill plug on the front of the tranny that takes a large allen wrench.... When warm, it should dribble out when you take the plug out...At that milage.... it is probably very dirty... I would drill and tap a drain plug and change out the fluid(or you can suck it out)... If that does not do the trick, you may need new blocking ring synchros.

First, you should check and consider a tune-up with Motorcraft plugs and wires, fuel filter, and air filter. Check the diagnostic trouble codes to see if you have any that were never taken care of and change your tranny fluid.

ok well im on a tight budget, so ill start with the tranny fluid probly, like redline or synchromesh and see how that works out, then ill get the rotors turned and new brake pads and see if that fixes the brakes( it should) then ill worry about the slight surging.

Hi Brandon,

New rotors can be had at Autozone for about $20 each, and pads can vary from $35-50 on average. Redline and Synchromesh are good, but alot of members here also like the Mobil 1 fluid which can cost a bit less.

Grinding reverse is normal as stated. Shift into a forward gear first, then reverse, all in one motion. I'd do a 1st - reverse motion.

If you can't shift into 2nd or 4th, it may be time for a clutch job. That sounds like the throw out bearing (TOB) is not pressing the plate hard enough.

Surging could be one of a million things. Bag plugs/wires, dirty MAF, etc.

Go to www.shotimes.com and click on "care & feeding the SHO" You'll probably find more info there than you'll know what to do with. That and also do some searches here. There's a wealth of info here for us all.

C Ya.

I paid a total of $66 for my rotors and pads. I understand you are on a tight budget but remember, if the rotors are going to be thinner than factory specs AFTER turning the rotors, buck up and get new rotors and pads. It's cheap insurance for a recked front end.

He said it's surging LIKE an automatic tranny when it's going bad. He also said pearl green MTX. I say warped rotors and bad plugs/wires. As said above rotors and pads will run about $70, and for plugs, $3.79/ea at oreilly. Check the plug wells for oil, and if you got it, then you need stem seals. If it comes to that e-mail me. ([email protected]). If you do stem seals then you NEED plugs and wires, as your wires are probably soaked in oil. If you wanna check without pulling them, push down real ******* one of the head on the engine end. The grey "chunk" below your intake. If you see bubbles from the top, you've got soiled wires. E-mail me iy you need any help.

Hmm evil voodoo hex, that sounds serious. You'll need a geniune black magic witch doctor, a ravens foot, eye of a newt, and a genereous portion of toad feces to solve that problem.Oh, and a ********* cauldron to broohaha over! Good luck with that!

Oh and i figured out that the surging was just the air conditioning, so i guess its not a problem. But i found another point of intrest. the steering is a bit strange, its like it hits somthing at the top almost feels like a little klunk hmmmm?
