Hey y'all-
I picked up my first SHO back in Dec. A clean '89 with good service record. It has clutch upgrade, and the first 60K was done. Now has just over 120K. I am planning to do my own 60K soon. Yesterday I yanked intake manifold & cleaned it and IAB valve (Thanks SHOtimes!). Also pulled & regapped plugs, retensioned timing belt, had a good look at timing belt/thermostat/valve cover gasket job. Seems I could get it done in a day, if all parts & tools on hand.
So I'm hearing stories of rod bearing problems and the diff. pin horror. How do I check for these things? Is rod bearing inspection simply mandatory? Can it be done from below, w/o removing engine? Should I just get the parts and do it ASAP?
How can I check this diff. pin problem out before something horrible happens? What's the fix?
What other issues do I need to put on the list as a new (old) SHO owner?
My car runs like a bull - burns very little oil, no sign of valve stem seal leakage. I think most of my oil loss is into plug wells! Those things were full to the tops of the plugs!
One last thing - my car seems to have a partial-throttle surge, around 25-2800 rpm, esp. when A/C is on - is this normal? Will new K&N (bought not here yet) fix this?
OK - time to help the newbie. Pile on the advice!
