I recently happened upon a local SHO with the quaife installed... $800 for the entire car, and yes it drove home... :woo-hoo:

After cleaning the car up a bit it needs some work, namely the 5th gear grinding problem I have... If it truely is a syncro or blocking ring problem I was wondering how much different it would be to swap the quiafe over to a MTX that was rebuild only 50k miles ago... Would it be as intensive as installing one outright?

I have never taken apart these transmissions, If i do this I would absolutely buy the video, but if there are certain things involved that I know that I cannot do, or am afraid to do, then I may just try to cut my losses and sell the trans outright.... or would it be easier to try and find a 5th gear syncro and replace that (I guess my major concern is about the whole "differential shimming" deal)

To put the quaife in a different trans you would have to reshim it. Getting the video from shonut is an excellent idea. It is what I used and walks you through everything step by step. The shimming tools and shim can also be rented. If it were me, I would just hunt for a new 5th gear syncro ect and replace it. I did this with my trans (different syncro) a while back, and was able to get good used ones from a forum member. just post in the WTB section

Trans is easy to take apart - do you have a Ford manual? It tells you how, and even has exploded diagrams to show how it goes back together.

I'd put the quaife in the 50k trans if that one shifts better, then swap the diff from that into this trans, and maybe try and figure out why it grinds 5th.

Some people have just swapped diffs into a different trans than they came out of (me included), I've read where some have had them fail. It would be BEST to check to see what shims you need, to do it right the first time.

In your other thread you mentioned it shifted hard. If the rest of the quaifed trans is questionable, then swap the quaife to the known good one and reshim it. If you jhave never diassembled a trans before it can sound intimitating.....dont be! As stated, its pretty easy. Just have a cleared off work bench and take your time.

It shifted hard because the shifter Boss on the trans was loose, tightened it up and all is Kosher... execpt 5th... So its looking like an isolated 5th gear problem....

Could improper shimming/worn bearings cause a 5th gear grind too? Or would that cause problems in every gear?

Do you have the same issues with reverse? 5th/Reverse are on their own shaft in the trans. Does it make any odd noises in 5th gear?

No, just 5th gear, it sort of "crunches" when going into 5th... it grinds for a sec and is in... Im assuming this points to 5th gear syncro/blocking ring, opposed to the whole trans

I swapped diffs without reshimming. 15K miles later 5th gear was grinding and popping out of gear. The bearings on the differential were destroyed. Properly installed the Quaife into another transmission, no problems.
