im gettin a new paint job in a few weeks and i have a couple of questions. first can maco do a good job if i give them enough money. i was planning on getting the top of the line paint service they have ( i think it was like 899 for the paint) and then pay them extra for some body work and new trim and badges. does anyone have any real experience with the higher end maco jobs.
second i want to keep my car black but want a somewhat custom look, i was thinking a black metallic or i heard of getting pearl chips put in the paint. i have never seen either, any feedbakc would be appreciated.

Dude, don't go to Maaco... I have seen their best, and it is not very nice. Trust me. I used to be a body man. Find several different body shops, and get some estimates.
Don't always go for the lowest price either.See if they will be willing to put some pearl in the clearcoat. You can pick almost any color..I have seen purple(or violet) pearl over black paint, and it looks slick. Of course,an all-black car looks really nice, too,as long as the bodywork is perfect and the paintjob is flawless.

Good luck!

Agreed, skip the Maaco type chain places and find someone local to you. I needed work done on my previous car and I asked around the local enthusiast scene and found a great place. They did excellent repair on my aluminum hood and sprayed a fantastic paint job.

The Maaco places really skimp on the prep details. They don't remove trim, they do shoddy masking, don't do the proper sanding, primering and fill, and use, generally, awful paint (baked enamel and the like). Their "high end" jobs usually just use more expensive paint but still skimp on the prep.

80% of the paint job is in the prep.

The pearl is just a powder form, which can be mixed into the clearcoat. A professional body shop that has their own paint mixing station should be able to do anything you want,as long as you are willing to pay for it :D
My uncle has used it many times(on motorcycles).and it looks kick-ass.
The only problem is,when doing a custom paintjob,is if you ever needed a repair done,it may be tough. The body shop would need to write down EVERY ingredient which they use in you rpaint job(how much pearl they put in/into how much clear, etc. It is a big math game when playing with paint mixes.Everything is measured out,to insure that the paint matches.

Don't let me scare you, though. If you do a custom paint job,you won't be sorry!

I repainted my SHO in July of 2001. It cost me about $1000. I did all the work except spraying the gun myself. It was a lot of work I removed everything. Doorhandles, Bumpers, All lower body trim, etc. It took me 3 months to sand it all myself (I had a very straight body and no major body work).
When painting black EVERYTHING SHOWS. Everylittle thing. You can't see it in primer but once black is on...
I was considering putting some metalic in the paint but decided not to when I saw a early 80's camaro painted that way and it looked like shit. Granted they did a poor job on the body work.
I finally opted on 93 Ford Black and am very pleased with the appearance of the SHO now. (It was practically grey when I bought it)
