Just completed a deal to pick up a 1993 Taurus SHO. All original, all the parts where there, with the exception of one 'SHO' center cap. I'm not going to lie to anyone... it's in bad shape. I wasn't even really looking to pick up an SHO, but this popped up on craigslist for dirt cheap, and I'm a sucker for a deal. Here's the catch, it won't start. It turns over, but won't start (and it has been sitting for 4 years). I did some research on the drive up to look at it, and it sounds like either a cam sensor or crank position sensor has gone bad. I'm not too worried about it, seems like those sensors aren't too expensive and if that doesn't fix it, or it's got a knock or something, I'll either sell the car or part it out.

Exterior is white with black leather interior. 3.2L engine with the automatic transmission. I wish it was a manual, but hey, it was cheap. Stock wheels and body isn't too beat up. High mileage, 209K. Probably pretty worn out.

Little bit about myself...

  • Now a 1993 Taurus SHO :thumb:
  • Daily drive a fairly heavily modified 1999 Mustang V6

  • My dad has a nice working area that we keep our cars in, but the bay that the SHO will go in is currently occupied by my friend's '02 GT that's getting stage 1 cams :(
  • Really looking forward to seeing if I can get this SHO running, haven't messed with 4-valve engines before, so this will be fun.

On to the car pictures...

I know it looks pretty thrashed, but I think it will clean up nicely with a good detail. Sorry for no interior pics.

Nice find! A white on black 93 is highly sought after by some members. The automatic might make it a little less desirable, but still looks good!

Welcome, white cars clean up well. I have a white/black Gen 2 as well. Start by pulling your codes and checking the obvious things (grounds, fuel, spark), etc.

If you don't have a code reader, then you can use a paper clip by following these instructions

Good looking car, and at 200k it is far from worn out.
Count on it being a crank position sensor, but if you take your time and do the work yourself, it will work out for you.
The black interior is a great find, and the all white exterior with the white wheels is a nice touch.
Everything is 10x harder to fix on the SHO as compared to your Mustang, but you will adapt and learn to work from underneath more than you work from the top.
Good luck with your project, and your first few hours of cleaning will yield some amazing results.

Welcome, glad to have you and your '93 here! We do have a few young 'uns on here, so you are in good company :) Been sitting so long, probably gummed up fuel/injectors. Any oil leaks on the passenger/firewall side of the engine? New battery wouldn't hurt, oil/filter change needed. A drop of oil in each cylinder before hand cranking.

Update: So when we bought this 93 ATX the CL ad simply said, "engine was running but some thing (sic) electrical prevents it from firing". The seller claimed the ignition module was changed but it didn't help. No signs of any oil leaks on the firewall side of the engine. The battery was out of it so we figured no codes would be stored. We removed and cleaned all the plugs and fogged each cylinder before turning it over. We confirmed a no spark condition with an inline spark tester. After doing a little research we decided to tear into the front end of the motor suspecting a CKP failure. It has been sitting long enough that we needed to check it out thoroughly anyway and probably go ahead and do the 60k service. After the tear down, it looks like there was a water pump failure. Everything at the bottom end looks pretty messy. The CKP "shutter" is pretty dirty/corroded and I doubt that the clearance to the CKP was within tolerance. I think the plan will be to clean everything up and reset the CKP gap and see if there is spark. I'd really like to get this running before I start throwing money & parts into it (water pump, timing belt, cam position sensor, etc). So far it really hasn't been that hard to work on.

You were born to be a SHO owner.
You will have no trouble owning / maintaining this car if the Crank Position Sensor rework is no problem for you.
