new gauges installed, question???

Hey guys, I installed my autometer tranny temp and volt meter gauges today and I have a question. I hooked the line for the light to the parking light bulb wire. When I turn on the parking lights they light up perfect, they dim and turn off with the switch just like they should. However, when I started the car the gauges lit up. I checked the lights on the car and they were off, but the gauges were lit. Any idea if they are supposed to light up just with the ignition on? I am wondering if the bulb near the switch lights up anytime the ignition is on. My bulb is burned out and I haven’t had a chance to get a new one.
