My car has had a couple of clunks that probably mean either bad end links, subframe bushings, strut bearings or all of the above. This is not that kind of noise.

It's hard to describe but it sounds like what you hear when you turn the wheels without moving on a paved garage floor. That kind of squeak/creak. It goes in time with the rotation of the tires. It does not change pitch or go away when turning the wheel either direction. It's not very loud and I can only really hear it at parking low speeds when driving in a parking lot or pulling into the driveway.

The noise just started after work was done on the car and the shop rotated the tires front to back. It is coming (I think) from the driver's side front.

I had the outer tie-rod ends replaced (bought moogs and took 'em to a local shop) and an alignment done. After getting the car back it felt twitchy so I took it back to the shop and had them take a look at it. Their "head tech" took it for a drive and said it wasn't an alignment problem it was a tire problem and they rotated the tires (Eagle RSAs) front to back. He said something about the bad tie-rod ends possibly causing the alignment to shift, causing the tires to wear a certain way and now that the alignment was back in spec the tires, being worn abnormally, were causing the strange twitchy feeling. Dunno if that's BS or not but it sounded plausible.

Rotating the tires took care of the twitchiness but now I have this noise. These tires may not be old mileage-wise but they probably are in terms of years. Could this be the sign of a bad tire? Or something like a wheel bearing? I did the 9 & 3 test and there was a little play but I didn't have the steering locked. There seemed to be an equal amount of play (or give in the steering? again, it wasn't locked) on both sides.

Of course the obvious answer would be to rotate the tires front to back again and see if the noise goes away....

Duh. :p

Oh well. Too late to do that tonight. I'll do it tomorrow or friday and let y'all know what happens.

I don't know what they were when I first got the car back but as of tonight the front ones are at 105 ft/lbs. It still makes the noise.

Being way overtorqued could cause that noise?

They weren't THAT tight - it didn't seem to take any more effort than usual to get the lug nuts loose...

I had that same noise, but for some reason it is worse when cold outside. I had the same noise once on my Cobra and that turned out to be ball joints.
I am going to have them replaced after my vacation next month so I hope that will be the ticket.

It turns out the noise WAS the tire. I rotated 'em front to back on the driver's side and the noise in the front left went away.

I KNEW these RSAs were crap.

The only question is...do I replace them now with what I CAN afford or wait a few paychecks and get what I really want?

If I replace them now I'm looking at something like the Kumho ASX, Falken ZE-912, or Yokohama Avid V4s.

I'm looking at All-Seasons because I want to buy 17" wheels and summer tires next year. I'll need something to get me through the winter. :)

What I would REALLY like to put on my stock wheels is a set of Goodyear Assurance Triple-Treds. I know from experience these tires are AWESOME in the rain, even more so in the snow. The problem is, they're expensive. 16s run in the $130/ea range compared to the high 80's/low 90's of the Kumho ASX or the just over $100/ea Falken or Yokohamas.

The Goodyears probably won't handle as crisply as the others on dry pavement so I'd have to dial it back a bit this summer but like I said, they excel in the rain and snow.

Decisions, decisions...

I certainly like the price on the ASXs...but they only got a so-so rating on Tire Rack for snow traction. That's the only thing that's making me hesitate on buying a set.

If nothing else goes wrong in the next 2 weeks and I can keep my hands off the $$ left over from today's paycheck I'm leaning towards the TripleTreds.

My mind's not 100% made up so I might be able to be persuaded otherwise. :)

If your concerned about snow... My BFG Traction T/A's were unstoppable.

The thing drove in snow like my 4x4 Chevy LUV. Great snow traction. I learned my lesson about how important an alignment is. I wore through the insides on 3 of them when I still had tread left.
