Well this is an update to a tread about 2 months ago.

I recieved my new to me engine with 74k on it. It was very clean externally. After inspection I realized that it had only been pressure washed and had no signs of a 60k. So my just recieved engine got a good teardown on its first day and I did all the 60k stuff to it.

The plug wells had oil in them, oil pan leak..which was no biggy as it was coming off for new bearing anyway.

After everything was back together...but still on the stand...~3 weeks had gone by...you know for parts and stuff.

Now I had to get my old engine out.

Just to tell you...I am no wrencher. I can change my oil...stuff like that...but have never in my life changed an engine.

I started with all the easy stuff...air box...battery tray..then moved to radiator and all the stuff in front/top of it (air bag sensors..ABS mod)
Then went to the wiring harness. which was easy to disconnect but I thought "theres no way Im gonna remember where all this goes."

After that I went under the car to get all those bolts. ( Tranny/y-pipe/Motor mounts/ect)

Finally after about 2 weeks of working like 3 days a week for 3 hours a night. (I do have a real job too...and was working alone) I asked my dad to come help me hoist it out.

Come to find out I had only forgot 1 hose. (power steering) It took about an hour to get it out..no biggy..but was a tight fit.

Now I had t swap over all the pullys/Alt/power steering pump. That took a couple hours as I had it all on but the Alt when I see that the Alt of my 92 wont go on my 95 engine...different mounting bracket. So I have to take the AC compreesor back off and take the bracket from my 92 and put it on the new engine to get it to work. After this I get all my belts back on.

Now clutch side. My clutch off the 92 wasnt bad..it had only about 8k on it. I took it off and figured I'd just get the flywheel resurfaced anyway.....just cause it looks awesome when its done. Another day for that.

While Im waiting..I go down to Napa and for $219 and $165 core I get my new Rack and pinion. Take it home...slap it in in less than an hour..take the core back.

Ok...engine ready to go in now.....this was fun...not.

When I started this..I told myself..I dont wanna take the tranny out with the engine...so it was a goal. I did that...no that I think about it...Im ********..it has to be easier the other way.

Just to tell you...with skipping the details..

It took 5 hours to get it back in with 3 people helping...not fun.

Finally after it was it I could start putting stuff back together..and as luck would have it because I took ever bolt off..I knew where every single one went.

Assembly took about 3 days at 3 hours each.

I left the y-pipe off till last as I just has to hear it with no exhaust on it...loud.

When it was finally time to see if I screwed somthing up or not I was thrilled to see that my new engine fired right up and came up to a nice idle on the first try.

It just goes to show ya....this board will make anyone try wrenching.

Now all I need to do to it is get an alignment..me and my bad eyes putting the rack in...and an inspection..ran out in Dec.

Dude.

I love hearing stories like this. I've never pulled an engine myself before, either :)
Perhaps I should start looking for a 3.2....

Congrats!

Nothing like doing it yourself. Now you can tell your kids & grandkids... I remember when...

Been there with the old / new V6 accessory brackets. Pulled a 91 engine out to drop into a 95... no workie without swapping everything. :)

I pulled my SHO engine/tranny by dropping the subframe. I almost blew a nut by moving the subframe/engine/tranny assembly without help.

Which way is easier? Dropping the subframe? Or pulling the engine?

I have a 3.2 almost ready to install.

That's awesome! What a great read! I was rather ****** an hour ago about the news in other threads about shonut not being able to get new syncro gears anymore. Really made me feel like throwing in the towel with my SHO if only I could afford to do so now. But I just came back from a pizza run and even with the extra weight of the AWA it's a lot of fun using the power...and all I got is a tired out old 3.0 with a y-pipe and CAI.

Crap, discontinued parts is really going to start ******* me off more and more though.

Anyways, that's a great story and I'm sure a lot of people here would agree with the moral of that story: The combination of this board and having cars with enough miles that they need the work (and enough power to motivate us to do that work rather than ditch the cars for something else) means a lot of people are getting educations in car maintenance and repairs that will pay off long after our SHOs have rusted into the dust from whence they came.

Woohoo! Here's to a new age in the practice of home auto repair and maintenance! thumbs_u beer
