new clutch question

can anyone tell me what i need to do as far as breaking in my new clutch , or how i need to drive it and for how long ??? thanks !

When I installed mine, I took it for a spin and redlined it in 1st, 2nd, an 3rd. After that, I pretty much redlined it every here and there and so far so good, no problems.

How ever, maybe I lucked out, they (members here) say it can glaze the clutch disc when driving it hard within the first 1k miles or so. It's best to take it easy for the first 1k miles to break it in and get the maximum life, I assume.

If you haven't already, try to adjust the clutch cable to see if it needs it.

If you want to get the most out of your clutch, please ignore TY SHO's reply. You need to treat the new clutch like a baby, shifting below 4k RPM, easing it into gear. Do this for 500 miles. Upward toward 400 miles, start taking her past 4k RPM and gradually introduce her to the scream of the secondaries. Do this and your clutch should last for quite a while.

Stock clutchs only need a few hundred miles of break in. I gave mine about 500 miles before going to the strip. Racing clutchs will need more.

Also note that break-in miles are considered stop and go city type driving. A 500 mile hiway trip will do almost nothing for it.

Is it the miles or the number of shifts that count? Could I take a 500 mile road trip on the interstate (minimal shifting) to break it in?

I tend to shift a fair amount between 4-5 on the highway to pass people, or when approaching slow people. Would this help break in the clutch? I was planning on driving the 100 mile trip (each way) between Columbus and Cincinnati to help put some miles on the '94's new clutch. If this won't help, then.. that sucks!! headbang

Seriously, I will make sure to keep it below 4k for a while and no hot rodding.. but what about the mileage then.

Also, FWIW I have the NEW SHONut kit with the reinforced PP/fibertuff disc/Ceramic TOB.

Anytime you let the clutch out while the car is running, its going to break it in. Of course, it will break in faster if your stopped and starting out in first compared to matching rpms when shifting from 4th to 5th.

But why do you downshift to 4th on the highway? I just set the cruise and away I go...if I have to slow down some, 5th gear will still take me back up to 70/80/90 pretty quick. shrug

I'm talking about going from about 70ish to 50-55. I guess maybe I'm used to the gimp clutch in the '95 now where I got more power in 4th because it slipped around in 5th. That is the next painful project I am up for. I'll see how it goes with the '94. Maybe I will have to just drive around every night in the city.
