You say the steel sleeve was loose.... Was it loose because the sleeve was worn, or the trans snout is worn? Maybe the new 'older style' TOB has too much play and is digging into the snout because it is worn. I guess the only way to know is to pull the trans out and try both styles of TOB and see if they move freely on the snout. I just don't like that the sleeve was loose.... what caused it to come loose???

Install a quill sleeve, using plenty of Locktite Sleeve Retainer. (The sleeve is not just for damaged quill repair)

Install updated TOB. (the one that fits the sleeve)

Check and preferably replace the plastic fork shaft bushings; ShoSource or ShoNutPerformance

Verify clutch disc is printed with "engine side" or similar on one side and install that way. If it is not printed, then I would not install that disc. Call South Bend.

Check the pins in the flywheel and make sure they not sticking out far enough to prevent the pressure plate from cinching down absolutely flush. Grind them down if necessary.

I am also suspicious of that pressure plate. I don't like stage 3 anything.

.

I have this same clutch in my Vortech SHO. It's a easy clutch to drive around in. Its only "Stage 3 Quality" is its abrupt engagements, but you can still drive around those.

What are the plastic fork shaft bushings?

I know that I will have to pull the clutch out again. I just need a couple of days to let it sink in. AAARRGGHH!

I guess that I will get the sleeve and a new TOB.

Stinks that you have to pull it out agian, but atleast you know what the issue is and how to fix it. How were you able to verify the clutch plate was in backwards without pulling the trans?

Good luck with the job.
The nice thing is all your fasteners, including the exhaust manifold nuts, have been off recently, and you won't have the usual surprises. Busting off those manifold studs adds a lot of grief to the job.

Many of us have been there. It stinks. When I did it, you could not release the clutch at all, it was always engaged. Made it a little difficult to stop. This was after I read 'engine side' on the clutch disc and thought to myself "Who would be dumb enough to install this backwards?" Ha. I'll never say I'm very smart, but I do learn from my mistakes :salute:

While you're in there, swap out that TOB and install a new quill sleeve properly (with green loctite sleeve retainer as previously described). The aluminum snout wears quickly without the sleeve, and is probably already worn down from when the transmission was new before the first quill sleeve was installed.

There's a good reason that everybody has been using the quill sleeves for the last twenty years; they don't last for crap without them, and the snout on yours is probably already worn out.

I guess that is what happens when you are doing 10 things at the same time...
