I need new tire advice.
what should I get here?
All 4 in need of changing.
I live in Iowa so all seasons are expected.
What my biggest bang for the buck here?
And I wont be putting on any of those hoopty mobile tires.

Scott provided a great place to start researching for tires. Be sure to look at the customer feedback for each specific tire. Everyone on this forum seems to have a favorite tire for their SHO. Keep in mind in order to get an 'all season' tire, you'll typically be giving up some performance characteristics. Personally, I have a set of Yokohama Avid V4s and have not been disappointed yet. Granted, they are not a true high performance tire. But living in MO, I'm using these year round and made it through a couple of light snows last winter with no problems. Haven't put on much more than 10k but they have had great wear to date. With tires, you typically get what you pay for..........

I just bought a set of Sumitomo HTR+ "Ultra high performance all season" tires for the M. 235/40/17. They were relatively inexpensive and didn't take too much weight to balance them. They're quiet on the freeway, have good grip and are okay for the moderate winters we have here in Baltimore/DC. $104/ea in my size, as of two weeks ago.

Dunno what they cost in 225/55/16, but go to the tire rack and check it out.

John are you gonna bring that M3 to a FATT at summit point in the spring? I'll keep you posted on what dates we nail down for a spring track day, and you can come out and run with us.

What's FATT?

Would love to hit the track with it, but it depends on the format. I'm not about to drive the thing at 9/10ths and risk damaging/rolling it.

Used to do track days with the Porsche club when I had my RX-7 turbo. After seeing two of my friends (good drivers) get into serious trouble during track days... I'm a little more paranoid than I used to be.

Keep me posted.

Love my dunlop sp5000's.

Oh and tire rack is the best place to buy. I usually save around $60 on a set of tires after they are mounted and balanced.

FATT = Flying Around The Track :D

It stands for Friday at the track, it's BSR's track day format. If it's your first time at their program, you'll be in group 1, so you can back it down a few tenths if you don't want to hang it all out.

"I'm not about to drive the thing at 9/10ths and risk damaging/rolling it."

Yeah the guys in my groups who think like that hate me. It's fun running real hard with the big $$ iron, if I dump mine in the grass or dent in a fender, I don't really care :) Rip all the parts off, go buy another $900 SHO and do it all over again.

I'm all for a "no passing in the turns" and "wave to pass" track day, but full on racing, no way. I don't trust about 90% of the weenies who go to those events and think they're Mario Andretti. Not with my $3200 SHO and not with my BMW.

Lots of stuff can happen beyond your control during a track day - like the subaru rollover video shows so clearly.

But, yeah, count me in! thumbs_u

I used to spend a couple of weekends each Summer at Summit Point when I lived in MD. I remember in '98 or 99 when a kid in a shiny new GTI VR6 was racing in the Rabbit/Golf class where most of the cars were 10+ years old. Anyway, not only did he get his ass handed to him on the course but he ended up wrecking pretty bad. Guy had tears down his face cause apparently he was driving "Dads" car and he had a lot of explaining to do.
I'm with John on this one...I wouldn't drive my $4K SHO or any new car at 9/10ths on a road course.
BTW - you should hear the stories of guys having their cars towed after an accident at the track to some remote road and dumping them into a tree or the woods. Lack of insurance from "accident while racing" will kinda force you to do crazy things!

John the FATT days are "no passing in the turns" and point-bys on the straights. No real racing, just grudge matches :D

I'm actually looking to do some door 2 door enduro events next year with my 89 (as well as some time trailing) should be fun!

At least 3-4 cars I've seen torn up at the FATT days, a couple of turbo RX-7's last time, a CRX, and seems like another guy had lunch with the tires sometime last year. I heard about a guy in a mustang who got killed there 2 or 3 yrs ago.

I highly recommend the BFGoodrich G-Force T/A KDWS in size 225/55-16. I live in Michigan and the tires have been fantastic in the dry and wet. Possibly this weekend I will get to try them in the snow as well.

These tires are WR rated (168 mph) and have an excellent treadwear rating of 400. They are currently $100 at Tire Rack. My previous tires were Michelin MVX4 Plus VR rated which sell for $143 each and weren't nearly as good.

I also highly recommend the Tire Rack, having purchased wheels, tires, springs and shocks from them several times in the past.

Whatever you do, don't buy some cheap SR or non-speed rated tires for your SHO - a high performance sedan really needs high performance tires for safety's sake.

I have the BFG G-Force KDWS on my 92 also. I love them. Was at Summit Point this past summer and the tires really work well for and hipo all season tire. You will notice a ride difference if you buy them. They have a stiff side wall and if you put them on stock slicers they might have a little trouble putting them on if you get 225/55/16 like I did. I don't see snow with my 92, but as for rain they work really well. thumbs_u

After a lot of research, I bought Yokohama AVSdb, 225X16X60, great in wet (part of design is similar to Aquatread)or dry, very good tire wear, cool looking tread design, extremely quiet, speed rated, cost $106.00 at Discount Tire.
I had BFG before, like these better. Also, the tread wear of BFG not so hot, and the indicators built into the tire crossed the grooves, causing bad hydroplaning!
