Hi all, I finally picked up the SHO. Heres the deal... The battery is dead and it only will run for about 15sec when I start it. So I can't pull the codes. The engine makes a noise like if you let one rip under water. It sounds like it's sucking when it's supposed to be blowing. Basically it is running HORRIBLE! Can anyone think of anything that this could be? The engine came out of another SHO, and the guy said that when he re-installed it in the new car he replaced the timing chain and did the valve job. Any ideas? It's a 91 5 speed MTX. Thanks.

It sounds like your timing is way off. My sho made that sound when the cam sensor went. What happens is that the wrong cylinders try to fire at the wrong times. Don't let the engine run like that, cuz you could do some MAJOR damage. Check your timing BELT to see if the marks line up with the dots on the cam sprockets. You can do this by removing your cam covers on the passenger side of the engine and taking a look. Also you can remove your passenger side splash guard to see if your crankshaft sprocket is lined up as well. Good luck.

Man that is what I figured. I picked this car up for $350.00 because it wasn't running... So hopefully I can get it in the shop later this week and get the timing fixed. Kick ass! Thanks for the help.

Just a warning to you, there are 2-3 different marks on the crankshaft pulley. The are not the small holes you see on the side of the pulley, they are little notches, and should in car terms be 60 degrees apart: going clockwise around the damper, 60 after, TDC, 60 before. You want to align in to TDC according to the small timing tab on the lower timing cover. Align the correct mark to the 0 on the timing tab, then pull the damper and the lower timing cover and match all the marks up. You will see small dots on both cam sprockets. Line these up with the lines that are above them, and then place the timing belt with the two lines on the belt onto each of the two dots, lined up with the lines on the engine. Hopefully I didn't lose you. Good luck!

The only chains on the SHO engine are for connecting the timing belt driven intake cam to the exhaust cam on each bank. They are rarely, if ever, replaced. He must have meant the timing BELT.

To align the belt during installation, there is another indent on the crankshaft cog. With the two indents on the camshaft sprockets set at 12 o'clock and in line with the raised marks in the metal rear belt cover, the indent on the crankshaft cog will be at about 5 o'clock. Orient the belt such that you can read the part number from the driver side fender. With the two white marks on the belt matched up with the indents on the two camshaft sprockets, match the third white mark on the timing belt with the indent on the crankshaft cog. Only when all three white marks on the belt are matched with the indents on the three cogs will the timing be set correctly.

And to think I was gonna purchase that car....Sometimes I wish I would listen to myself a little more often. I remember seeing it on ebay and thinking how I wanted it. You got a **** of a deal Mike! Good work! If you can stand to sell it I might consider helping you make a healthy profit. (think: more mods to the GL!)

. I'm really only half serious, but if you aren't attached to the car, throw me an email.

Me too!!! I saw that on ebay a while back and was just about ready to bid on it for a winter SHO, but I really didn't feel like messing with the timing belt (which I figured was the problem.) DAMN, if I'd known it was just wires I would have been ALL OVER that car!!!
