I took my 93 ATX to a muffler shop because my SHO doesn't seem to be breathing like it should, plus I've been hearing a rattle from underneath sometimes. At first they said that both mufflers were shot, but when they opened it up to replace them, they found chunks of cat in them.

So now I get to by new mufflers and a y-pipe. What I need to know is where can I get the best value on these?

I don't have alot of cash after my tranny rebuild (cost me $1200 for the rebuilt tranny, rebuilt torque converter, all Ford upgrades, and shift kit), so I need an inexpensive solution, but I also don't want to get something cheap that I'll end up wanting to replace real soon.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I'd try a true dual set up... or buy a used y pipe and gut the cats

Best deal on mufflers is Summit turbo mufflers (both shipped to your door for under $40) thumb
ATX y pipe... not sure. If you want a high flow Y, it will cost you 300-400 bucks I think. Honestly, I would get a used Y pipe and replace the cats with smooth bends.
I know first hand what a clogged exhaust will do, it will turn your SHO into a GL...
literally.

The Summit Racing turbos look like a good option, and I'll probably get the 3" tips to go with them. I'm not sure I could find anyone willing to take the cats out though...

Does nobody know where I can get a good price on an ATX y-pipe?

The turbos are good. I would try posting in the want to buy section here for an ATX y pipe. I actually have one, but I might chop off the cats and make a catless y pipe. Good luck thumb

Okay, I think I found someone that'll be willing to take out my cats (a friend of a friend), but I wonder if it would be better to gut them, or replace them with straight pipe? Does it really matter?

Also, what kind of labor cost should I be looking at to get the cats gutted/removed, and Summit Racing mufflers and tips put on?

It is in violation of Federal regulations to remove an emissions control component from a car. Be careful. No shop is likely to be willing to remove them and not install new converters.

The easiest, most cost efficient way is probably to go to a local muffler shop and see what they'd quote on a manifold back exhuast. Maybe something along the lines of 2.25" diameter, will give a good sound and boost in performance assuming it's bent nicely. I'm in FL so cats aren't necessary and my shop told me it'd be about $400 for the said exhaust. Get some good resonators (summit) and the rasp shouldn't be too bad.
