As you know on the shogun I picked up a GM-1 turbo IHI/Borg that was on a 6.5 diesel.

Problem is , If I want it to run properly and get optimal hp (aiming for 450+) , that turbo have zero maps out there so it hard to know if its the perfect candidate for what I wanna do.

Now , I have stumbled upon this site : http://www.squirrelpf.com/turbocalc/ , and according to it , The GT3582R and the 62-1 are the ones to aim for. (A/R.70 approx)

Although the maps are pretty much limited on this site.

Anyone else want to chime in on this? It will be daily driven , so I want solid boost , but I would like it if it had grunt at a low rpm , so I dont want to have to wait 2 hours before I get all the juice.

Also open to twins.

The 62-1 I had was a ton of fun, made great TQ, though not as quick to boost as the t3/4 that was on it before. Which in reality made it faster. Less wheel spin down low, and much better high rpm ability.

How much HP did you make with it?

Turbonetics makes the 62-1 ? Or its a generic thing?

AFAIK, 62-1 is Turbonetics speak.

On a low comp 3.2, with no other engine modifications, 80mm maf, car made 394whp/360ft lbs at 13-14psi. A few times, on the street, due to a malfunctioning boost controller (my own fault), I saw in excess of 22psi. It made a lot of power at 22+psi. :)

Hmm , but since this is a RWD setup , maybe some early boost can be appreciated.

What was your A/R numbers on that particular turbo?

those new Borg-Warner turbos are way nice - integrated wastegates and bypass, so it makes the plumbing much easier. Also, some of them are dual scroll, so the spool fast and still breathe well at higher rpms. I was going to get one of those until I happened across a Vortech at a price I couldn't turn down....

With traction, early boost and a strong midrange is a lot of fun. IWG's may seem nice, but suck at great boost control and backup pressure in the cylinders compared to an EWG. There's also that chance of boost creep which is what Scott saw on his remote-turbo setup. That actuall worked well for him with traction down low and higher boost in higher gears.

you are absolutely right about the boost creep potential with the iwg - the BW site provides you with a very good calculator to ensure that the bypass size is sufficient for the bypass flow to avoid boost creep.

here is a place to look: http://borgwarnerdealer.com/

If you can afford it, get something with a billet compressor wheel. The billet wheel gives you a quicker spool, so that you can use a larger a/r on the exhaust for the upper range. Fwiw, I liked having Power in the upper rpm range rather than low. This motor makes peak power up top, so might as well match the turbo to that.

It was fast. Never felt a car tq steer in 3rd like that. Damn thing jumped half a lane lmao. And u were short shifting it. That ride and Kris s/c blue 95 was the final deciding factor that I needed boost :). I can't beleive that was in 07 holy crap, I was 17 then. I feel old at 23 now :(

The very first time I went WOT in my turbo ATX I had hooked up my wastegate backwards and pegged my 20 PSI gauge. It was spinning the tires at 60mph... I thought I was on 4psi and though boost was amazing... :angelnot:

edit: to contribute to the thread. I ran a percision PT67 on a stock 3.2 automatic trans. boost started at 3K and 3500-4K was full spool. crazy top end power, and fantastic highway power. Not so good around town at lower speeds

60-1 Turbo
This is the turbo I bought for the cobra with ball bearings and 0.68 a/r exhaust housing. I don't have the car up and running fully yet but so far spool looks to be great.
